container blueberry ??

I have read many post on folks up potting the bushes , can a person just plant them in a 25 gal pot right off the get-go ?

Here in Florida some of the commercial folks grow in half barrels and go right from 3 gallon pots to the 30 gallon pots. On most plants you are not supposed to do that but it actually helps the blueberries establish. For one they want always moist and the larger container helps with that and it keeps the roots cooler. Go for it.

Altogether I have 170 plants at various stages. I planted 100 new liners last month with 10 new varieties that I didn't have before. The ones in the pic were planted last July and yes they are loaded with fruit. Many recommend to remove all buds the first year as the branches are too brittle to support fruit load. Well I was a newbie and wanted to taste so I let them bare.

ed: Once a month ammonium sulfate or a little Osmocote is enough if they are growing fast enough. Mine are actually growing too fast after they get some size so I'm trying to slow them down. I may cut off fertilizer for several months on the plants more than a year old. My Sweetcrisp in a 10 gal pot that I've had 22 months is 5ft tall and almost as wide. It could have 8-10 lbs fruit this year. I've already applied a little Osmocote. That may be all it gets all year. How did yours grow last year?

Hey Brady, nice to hear from you. Yes, I have a Sweetcrisp, and a Farthing, but they spent the winter in the garage. They are both enjoying their first day outdoors. Will be bringing them in at night though. Farthing is breaking bud, but the Sweetcrisp is a bit behind.....seems to be alive though :-) My Northern Highbushes were outdoors. I just took a good look at them, and the buds are still tight, so I might wait a bit until they wake up to move them.

Looking great Ed! Does the sweetcrisp have fruitbuds? Ive got 7 of those half drums ready to go now and will be potting up all my sweetcrisp in them and a few select others. Springhigh, Scintilla, Jewel and Snowchaser are definatly getting a permant home at my house. The others are still alittle iffy in my mind at this point. Have you gotten to taste all of your varieties to this point?

With most plants it would hold too much moisture. For most plants you want the soil to dry out mostly before you water again. Because the BB like moist it is a very good way to go about it. In a 30 gallon pot with a good pinebark peat mix you should never have to repot them.

berry_Bob, it will work. You will just be watering more soil than the plant needs. The directions that I followed for starting out with BB called for the following:
* Start all 4 inch to 1 gallon plants in 2 to 5 gallon containers.
* For established 2 to 5 gallon plants, choose a 16 to 20 inch container.

It was easy and worked well for me. Let us know how things go for you.
