Fertilizing container blueberries?

Fruitnut.......I was wondering what your fertilizer regiment is these days for your blueberries?

I only have a few plants, but last year, when forcing growth, if I remember correctly, I was using a tablespoon of ammonium sulfate per 2 gal. of water every 2 weeks, and I was suing MG liquid in between.

Once a month ammonium sulfate or a little Osmocote is enough if they are growing fast enough. Mine are actually growing too fast after they get some size so I'm trying to slow them down. I may cut off fertilizer for several months on the plants more than a year old.

My Sweetcrisp in a 10 gal pot that I've had 22 months is 5ft tall and almost as wide. It could have 8-10 lbs fruit this year. I've already applied a little Osmocote. That may be all it gets all year.

How did yours grow last year?

fruitnut - what type of Osmocote are you using?
I scoured the web for what you have previously called Osmocote for Acid Loving Plants or Osmocote for Azaleas...
but it appears they have re-packaged. Even the main Osmocote website did not have anything like that.

I know what you mean about compost tea, foolishpleasure. I brew comfrey tea with a combination of compost and fresh comfrey, and the smell is...intense. Thanks for the tips, Brady. I'm going to move nearly all of my blueberries to 10 gallon Geo Pots this winter, so I'm considering working a good bit of cottonseed and/or alfalfa meal (and maybe a few other things) into the new potting mix. I could then supplement with fish and kelp through the growing season. Keith at Backyard Berry Plants said that he used his full strength fish/kelp/molasses blend on his potted plants once every week (he also noted that he had good results from a further application of chicken manure fertilizer for struggling plants). When I did the math, I realized that's going to be quite expensive. I figured I'd go through 6 or 7 gallons of fish and a couple of gallons of kelp in a growing season, which would easily add up to $100 to $150. However, if I could cut the application rate by combining it with a relatively cheap seed or alfalfa meal, it would be manageable. Since it's hard to predict how quickly the seed meal will be broken down in the pots, the liquid fish and kelp with more readily available nutrients would help guarantee that the plants are getting an adequate nutrient supply. I might even do some side by side comparisons of chemical and organic fertilizer applications. I picked up a couple of discounted Brightwell bushes at Home Depot a few weeks ago, and they might be perfect candidates since they're nearly identical in size.

I've also bought soil fertilizer for container blueberry plants. You can not use it as directed. You have to dissolve it in water and measure the ppm or ec. Two ways of measuring the same thing. I follow standard ppm levels for feeding heavy then only using water for 2 or 3 waterings. You could do that or use the standard ppm levels for constant feeding. Be warned there are 2 ppm scales and they are not interchangeable. Also some soil fertilizer if not all are time delay aka won't dissolve. You have to crush it to dust or use a blender.

Al's 5-1-1 mix, which you've no doubt seen reference to in this forum, is ideal for berries of all types. The ingredient list is very simple -- five parts pine bark fines, one part peat, and one part perlite. For raspberries and blackberries, you would also add one tablespoon of lime per gallon to raise the pH, but you should leave out the lime when growing blueberries. In zone 6B, you more than likely will have no trouble overwintering Northern Highbush, Half High, or any of the more northerly adapted Rabbiteye or Southern Highbush blueberry varieties without protection. Nonetheless, it never hurts to add an insulation layer of mulch, leaves, etc. around the pots as a precaution. As for blueberry pot size, you can start as small as three to five gallons (depending on the size and age of the bush when you purchase it), but, long term, you'll get better results with a pot in the 10 to 15 gallon range. You can certainly go bigger, especially with a vigorous rabbiteye variety, but that's not essential.

Otto, Talking about blueberries, I became really addicted with blueberries and collected over 30 different cultivars (both Southern High bush and Rabbit eye inclusive) with single and multiple plants in the past two years totalling 46 plants (all of them in containers) so far. My target is maximum of 50 plants and I am nearly saturated with blueberry plants, lol. Spinosad (derived from the fermentation juices of a lowly soil bacterium called Saccharopolyspora spinosa) is a relatively new insect killer that quickly and safely controls a variety of caterpillars, beetles and thrips pests. To chemists, spinosad is a complex molecule known as a "glycosylated macrolactone;" but to gardeners with a hankering for safer products, it may be a godsend. Bacillus thuringiensis, known for years to savvy gardeners as "Bt", has been a standard weapon for the war against caterpillars. As an insecticide, Bt is a safe, selective product for caterpillars. However, Bt lacks staying power. Instead of Bt's one or two days' residual, spinosad keeps killing for up to four weeks. In addition, spinosad kills thrips, which Bt doesn't faze. If you grow citrus and have leaf miners problem, spinosad takes care of that as well. If you have fire ants problem, spinosad takes care of them as well. The only downside is spinosad also kills honey bees, the pollinator for plants. It is recommended to spray spinosad either very early in the morning or late at night.

They grew well. I have a 4yo BlueCrop, and a 3yo Blueray. My container mix is very fast draining, so I think that alot of my liquid fertilizer leeched through. I'll probably repot this year and use a little more of a moisture retaining mix & possibly a little granular slow-release fertilizer. Here's a link to photos of them last fall.

Save the organics for the garden where the soil can break them down. Not the best for containers.
