Fern root systems?

I have my staghorn ferns in what's essentially a large, metal hanging basket full of sphagnum moss. Because it's relatively large, I sink some of my other plants down into the moss, too, just to save space.

However, the pteris mayii I had in there had apparently started growing roots of the bottom of its container and into said moss, and I took it out today, not realizing this. I'm not sure how badly I damaged the root system, but should I expect a lot of dieback, or did I probably not hurt it that much, or what? I'm just sort of surprised the root system was growing out that much, as the fern's not particular big, died back a lot over the winter* when it was indoors, and, honestly, it's been bigger (More foliose, perhaps, is a better word) before than it is right now

*(Underestimated light requirements a lot. Other ferns I have don't grow much without higher light, but don't really die back from it much either).
