Fern is drying out and dying at the roots

Help! I am super fond of this fern (I don't remember what it's called now..) It sits on my open shelves in the kitchen with fairly low light - it is right next to a southern window, but that window is under a shade tree so still pretty low light inside. During the winter it was getting a little more light because less leaves were on the tree. I've had it about 9 months now, and it sits in front of my Internet modem. I noticed the stems closest to the modem (which does not ever feel hot when I've checked) were drying out and dying. At first I thought this was directly related to the modem. However, over time the whole thing started drying out, crispy dead brown, from the base of each stem. It also went through a spell of losing a ton of leaves. There is new growth occuring. But at this point it seems to be dying faster than growing. Help!
