Scapes on new plants - leave 'em or cut 'em?
Comments (5)someone at walters gardens... who grows millions of hosta per year.. suggested to me.. that by the time the scapes are above the leaves .. in other words.. by the time you see them ... the energy is spent ... you would be too late to make a difference .... besides... after flowering.. in july or so.. they start extending new roots... storing energy for next year ... they will do this.. whether or not you cut off the flowers ... so whats the point ... i wonder if we talked about whether the flowers scapes extend on stored energy from the prior year [they come up in spring on stored energy] .... or whether.. since the leaves are unfurled by this point.. they are utilizing currently processed energy ... hmmmm ... if there was a brain cell with that knowledge.. it is long gone... lol ... but i dont think there was ... ken...See Morehosta flowers. love'em or not?
Comments (16)I don't have a lot of hostas yet but I'm working hard to change that. Of the ones that I have, most I could do without the blooms and having to tidy up afterwards but there are exceptions. Big Daddy's bloom is pretty spectacular. Twist of Lime puts on a good show as well as Good As Gold. Royal Standard is another one & with such wonderful fragrance. I bought it several years ago just because I thought it was pretty. I think it was the second hosta that I ever bought and had no idea that hostas can be fragrant. I added So Sweet, HoneyBells, Fragrant Bouquet & Fried Green Tomatoes last year and I'm eager for them to bloom since all are supposed to be fragrant. Just added Moonlight Sonata to my Wish List! Guess I should introduce myself. I'm Ally and I'm a blooming hostaholic in central Wisconsin. I usually hang out over in the Cooking forum but lurk in here quite a lot and sometimes over in daylilys....See MoreRandom/Misc. Pics? Post 'em Here!
Comments (81)Don, he wasn't my first parrot....He could be likened to finally getting a Porsche, if you're into cars. I brought him home when he was 5 weeks old.... about mid-April, 1999. Here is his baby picture when he came home. I'd been going over to my friend's house (the breeder), to hand feed him when she pulled him from the nestbox. I continued to hand feed him, with what is called "abundance feeding" so he weaned himself, at 22 weeks old, without feeling deprived. He weighed 600 grams as a well fed baby boy, and he weighs that now as an adult. He has beautiful feathers, no fat, great muscle tone especially in his breast which allows him to fly efficiently.....but consider that birds are so aerodynamic, with hollow bones, hollow feathers, they eat moderately frequently, also poop frequently and do it almost EVERY time before they take flight....which is a clue to imminent flight, by the way....See MoreHab flowers: Cut 'em or leave 'em on?
Comments (4)I only remove flowers under 2 different scenarios: 1) The plant is growing indoors in a window. Since there isn't enough light for the plant to actually produce fruit, it would abort the flowers anyways, I just speed up the process. 2) At the end of the season when I want the unripe peppers on the plant to finish and there won't be time for new ones to ripen before I have to move it indoors. Other than that, just let it go. It the plant is not strong enough to make peppers, it will abort the flower all on its own. Where did you purchase such a mature plant? Habaneros are notoriously slow growers and often have 90-100+ days to maturity. You're really ahead of the game here if you've already got flowers (of course, I don't know where you live, so you may not be ahead at all)....See More- 9 years ago
