I think an obsession is when someone has three baskets or seeds sitting around and is always digging through them or looking at them or reorganizing them and worst of all...showing them to all her friends.

I used to dream about gardening, especially in the very beginning. I've been saving my urine for years (obsession?) which is probably too prosaic to make the stuff of dreams.

My obsession is heirloom tomatoes... and peppers... and AG pumpkins... now old garlic too. See my post in the ''small but very productive garden'' thread...

Seeds drying

OK, maybe a little. (grin) I went from gardener, to seed saver, to preservationist... somewhere along the line, I guess I got carried away. ;-) Watch for these signs, it could happen to you:

- When you need to refer to a map to plant, or to find what you planted later in the season.

- You grow things that have numbers, locations, or sources in place of names.

- When everything you harvest needs to be in a separate bag or bucket & tagged... and it's a crisis when things get "mixed".

- The many seed catalogs that were the first sign of obsession begin dropping you from their mailing lists, because you no longer order.

- Each October, every available space in your home is filled with trays of seed & bundles of drying plants. Oh, and did I mention garlic & hot peppers hanging in the garage?

- You take a vacation each year to drive to a preservation farm.

If you find yourself joining the Seed Savers Exchange, you are probably beyond help. (lol)

You aren't monikered the 'zeedman' for nothing, are you?

I grow a lot of plants for seed also, but I mostly favor plants that can naturalize. This is not because I'm a primitivist, but because I'm far too dis-organized to do what you do - keep large quantities of seeds separated and labeled and etc. With naturalized plants they do the work.

I'm excited about the fact that cowpeas will grow and produce here (at least in some years), not only because they taste good, but also because they won't cross with other legumes and so saving seed will be very simple. I've got enough of the "queen ann" black-eyed peas saved for next year's row. I think I'm going to buy a 25lb sack of dried for eating this winter and a mid-summer fallow crop next year.

A tale of two climates: this summer I planted those peas around june 10; they didn't flower until early august, seven or eight weeks later. My dad planted cowpeas in central florida in early august; they were flowering four weeks afterwards!

I agree...zeedman...you win.

Instead of counting sheep at night to fall asleep, I visualize planting diagrams on graph paper. However, I will have to give this up as sometimes I get so involved in a particular planting scheme that I don't fall asleep until the wee hours.

Ok, this happens to me and I only have about 100 sq feet of in-ground space. Heck, it happens to me in the containers I plant! I mark each mini-crop and then squirrels/dogs/winds somehow eradicate my markers.

But yes, I think I would count as obsessed. Like I said, I have a tiny garden, and yet I have enough vegetable seed to plant an acre's worth of crops. Minimum. What do I think I'm going to do with all these bajillions of seeds?? And I keep buying or trading for more!

You know you have an obsession when your partner bans you from all garden related stores/websites/discussions and threatens to leave you should you get 'just ONE more'... but you do so anyway...
