Silicone II and Sticks ? :)

Hey everyone! I'm a new junkie :)

I am planning a project of building a low 'fence' around an herb bed using existing sticks and twigs. I was trying to figure out the best way to go about attaching the twigs.. I thought about wire, that might work. I really don't want to use string.. and some twigs will be too small to actually nail. I thought about the Silicone II that's used on the gazing balls. Does anyone have any experience using it on wood? Do you think it might work? Any suggestions would be most appreciated! :) I'll be happy to post pics when I'm done!

Nice fences.
I dont think GE II will work, even on your small fence. Not sure why. You could experiment with a very short section and let us know. Do you have access to grapevines? You could wind them around your sticks possibly.

If you're going to glue wood, I'd use Liquid Nails. Just follow directions and it seems to work really good.

Well, I bet a guy would slap you on the rear once & never again!!(If you had that stuff in you, it gets pretty hard) In high school I was walking up the stairs when some guy slapped me on the behind, I turned around to clobber him when I saw him standing there wringing his hand. gardencraze, I use a drill press which makes it very easy. You have to keep water in the area you are drilling or you will burn your bit out REAL fast. Let the bit do the work, if you press too hard the plate or cup will break. Even being careful I still break some...also when the bit gets dull the breakage goes up. If you don't have a drill press you will have to be extra careful and it will definately take more time....Oh yea, good idea to wear a mask to avoid the dust.

Wasn't it Tam who used allot of the white pumpkins last year? Sure hope she will stop by and post her Fall decor pics for us again this year. She has a blog now, so we might have to head over there to take a peek at her pretty decor items. And lucky us, we have some new posters with us now, so they will have new things for us to enjoy seeing! Yeah! Karen, you really did allot of Fall decorating last year and it turned out so pretty. I was thinking that anything I post will be boring for the gals who were on here last year. GE Silicone II Caulk Won't Dry

Silicone doesn't "skin" over similar to painters caulkings or even latex caulkings that have silicone in them. Caulks that "skin" over aren't necessarily dry within 24hrs, they are dry to the touch. Be patient, it typically takes longer than 24 hrs.

I'm no expert but, I don't think it would work either for a large scale of fence. It seems you'd have to use an awful lot of GEII. There should be more cost effective adhesives out there for that type of job, i.e., wood glues, etc.

GEII is iffy on sticks, for some reason. I made one fairy house attaching sticks and grapevines with GEII and it worked like a dream..the next day i used the same batch of sticks and tube of GEII on a different house and, after it dried, they all came off!

I agree with Karen, use Liquid Nails or something similar. Or you could try wood staples which would work as well. I have seen some rustic bentwood pieces that had smaller branches stapled together.

sticks are porus and why it will not work. And since it has 'grain' and bark it would flake off as well. I think Liquid Nails is the way to go. I would tack with nail or staples or wires to let it dry well. Leave them on to have some insurance.

I'm not sure if this would be feasible, but I have seen small zip ties at different retailers. Not sure the size of the fence, but thot I'd toss this in.

If you use zip ties to lash it together be sure to get the UV resistant ones. The regular indoor use ones will get brittle and snap quickly.

I believe that you'll be best off lashing (tying) the sticks together. Maybe it's all the Boy Scouts that I live with but lashing wont cause splitting or peel off. My guys lashed toghether an eight foot tall trebuchet (catapult) so solid that it launched soccer balls 150 yards. Their site at camp is always furnished with all kinds of lashed items.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to say thankyou so much for all the comments and suggestions. I am going to try a few different ideas over the next few weeks and see what seems to do best. I will definitely post pics when the project is completed.
