This summer our squash was hit big time. I know there was the SVB but there was a larger brownish bug that I never knew what it was. Lately I was going through my gardening book and saw it, the bug is the Leaf Footed bug. I read on another forum that they also like sunflowers so I was thinking of planting a row of sunflowers near my squash next year. Think that will work to keep them away from my squash? The ones we have are almost the same color as the soil so it's hard to see them. Squishing them was also recommended but that's hard to do when you have a large garden. Any tips?

I'd say the sunflowers will attract more bugs that will move onto your plants.

Those are relatives of stink bugs and squash bugs. Hard to kill. I think the best control is checking the leaves for the eggs and squishing them before they can hatch. But it's hard with a large garden and large squash plants.

I have tons of the black leaf footed bugs and stink bugs. The sunflowers are a magnet for them, and they stay on them. If I have sunflowers in my garden I do not have many leaf footed bugs in my garden. Sunflowers are a great trap crop for them!

A treehopper, Entylia carinata. Sometimes called thorn bugs, there is a reference to this one as a bottle-opener bug; they do not bite or sting. Could have come in on someone's clothing, or just flew in. http://bugguide.net/node/view/333/bgimage?from=0 Note the color and pattern varies between individuals.

They aren't interested in plants other than the adult beetles feeding on nectar and pollen. The tiny larvae eat carpet fibers and clothing, particularly if constructed from natural materials.

Thanks for your help. I’ll try rinsing them. I hope I don’t have to eventually toss them. I know it sounds silly but I have a sentimental attachment to them. I’ve had the mother plant for 27 years. This is the first time I’ve had any problems with pests. These are my only indoor plants. I can’t figure out how the bugs got in here unless I brought them inside with vegetables I had picked from my garden. Thanks again

You could try the soap and water method to control them.

Thanks. These guys are still around, they're climbing up my window screens. Do you think sticky traps would work? I had planned on putting in some stakes and painting them yellow, then smearing them with vaseline. Marg
