1st year Montmorency cherry tree questions

planted about 50 montmorency cherry trees this spring. most are doing well, only had one die.

land is slightly south sloping sandy soil formerly a hay field. trees are mulched and have been getting plenty of water from rainfall.

had some trees on the perimeter that had the leaves stripped off by deer but regular deer spray seems to have corrected that problem. have done minimal pruning, mostly just cutting off damaged branches and branches very low to the ground.

several of the trees have substantially less leaves and the leaves they do have seem a bit stunted relative to the trees that are doing well. there has been no evidence of insect damage.

should I be doing anything more/different with the trees that are not doing as well?

Holy crap, 50 Montmorency? Are you planning on going pro or did you simply want to feed a lot of birds? That's a lot of sour cherries.

You didn't really describe what the problem with the leaves is other than what it is not and that they're stunted so any suggestions are just a guess.
I would suspect cherry leaf spot and/or powdery mildew. Immunox will fix the mildew but the leaf spot is a losing battle at this point. If you're pro perhaps pro concentrations would take care of leaf spot.

Another guess is borers. That would depend on how stunted they are.

A picture would help give you a more accurate answer.

but depending on where you live, they do want some in the summer season. As I said, depending upon where you live. Generally, Pie Cherries are grown in a cool temperate climate, and here in the Pacific Northwest, a young tree does well with one time a week. All anyone can tell from this generic post is that Matthew lives in Zone 5. Nothing is mentioned about his local rainfall patterns or soil type or slope aspect or shade or etc. If a tree was only planted last spring, I do not think once a week would be over watering, unless he lives in a peat bog, and if so, the tree will not do well anyhow.

Old thread so may not be a ton of replies, so I'll chime in. How did you finally determine it was a Montmorency? I think a lot of cherry trees look the same regarding bark, petals and leaves, but may be different altogether. Tart cherries don't need a pollinating partner, so my guess is that the more mature 15' tree is maybe a sweet cherry variety. Of course if that's the case then it probably just needs a pollinator of a different variety (assuming the two cherry trees you planted last year were tart and not sweet) Just a thought.

Hi Bsmith, A soil test would most likely be free, and the most informative source concerning fertility. Your extension service is the place to go about that. Pruning for this cherry is unnecessary unless you want to limit its height or there is a dead branch to remove. We grow them in VA. Andrew, I do not know who gave you that info, but I have never found that to be true. I have rooted literally nearly 1000 cuttings over the year and have never had an issue with them flowering the following year. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the root system would be more established the following season if you keep it growing all winter. The issue is that you will have to deal with Mites and other issues if you keep them indoors all winter under lights. Again I personally would your newly rooted plants go dormant depending on their root system, they can establish them selves next growing season. Good luck

I bougth the tree last fall and had 3 cherries this year YOOPEE . just love it
I notice that something is eating the leaves , I would like to know what to do and how to take care of my tree . I would like natural way to care for it as much as possible ...... Thank you for your help
