That doesn't sound good. How long have they been in there? Where did you get them from?

Your Cherry is going to need a pollinator.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I'm new to this site and wasn't sure how it worked. I thought I would get an email saying someone replied. But anyway, I got the cherry tree from Walmart and the plums from Lowes. I got them this year in the beginning of June. They both were container trees. I didn't know I needed another cherry to get fruit. Will it still flower without a pollinator and is it to late to put another one in? Thank you for taking the time to help. It is much appreciated.

I've never had any luck with container trees. I would say they are shot. You can scratch the bark and see if its green underneath (alive) I think you are just going to have problems either way. Take them back and get a refund.

I got bare root trees this year. I got a sweet cherry "white gold" (on geisla 6 rootstock) that is self fertile (yours is not like frank said) It was just a whip and has put on almost 2ft of growth, all the bare root trees I got have exploded this year.

If you want to grow fruit I would advise you to make haste slowly. Spend the rest of the year reading this forum, learn about rootstocks, compatible vareties for pollination,spraying,insects, diseases,pruning , vareties that grow well in your area.

Im am very new but this forum is the best I have found. I got my sweet cherry before I learned that they dont do well up here LOL im on il/wis border. Tart cherry would have been a better choice.

If they have no leaves and they were container plants from June they are toast. I'd throw them back in their pots or a bag and take them back. I've had to take back trees/shrubs before.

I'd order bareroot this fall or winter for early spring delivery.

If you want to try sweet cherries, the two red ones that are the most likely to ever make it in your zone would be "Black Gold" and "Kristin". "Kristen" flowered for me this spring with winter lows of -26F. However, "Kristen" needs a pollinator and therefore no fruit for me :(

Raintree has very high quality plants and i've never had any issues.

Sour cherries will do well and they are very tasty. Both "Northstar" and "Meteor" have done well for me with fruit from both this year.

You have to protect your trees or the birds will eat everything.

If you go for cherries other than sweet cherries, then consider "Evan" chery as well. It is sold by St. Lawrence nurseries under the name "Bali" chery and it is between tart and sweet cherries (i.e. a bit sweeter than tart) and it can survive in Canadian prairies as well.

Thank you for all the help. I probably would still be looking for leaves if I didn't join this great site and write. I took the trees back and they refunded them with no questions asked. Thank goodness I kept the receipt. I will be looking for bare root trees from now on. I anyone has a good site that they use, I would like to know.

Dominus there are many great mail-order places. Cummins, Adams County Nursery, Raintree, Trees of Antiquity, One Green World all have cherries I think and all are excellent nurseries.

I got mine from www.grandpasorchard.com they are a retail/homeowner branch of moser nursery. All the trees have taken off and put on 2ft of growth or more. I will order from there again, it was only 1 day shipping to me raintree would have been about a week I think and shipping was not cheap.

Something to keep in mind is to order early and anything below 5/8 caliper is going to pretty much be a whip. My white gold cherry was a whip and I used the debudding method to promote branching and it must have worked because it really branched.
