first time using wheel cutter on glass

I just bought one of those small wheel glass cutters the size of a pen and thought I would give it a try. I have removed and cleaned some 10" x 12" glass panels from one of those old 6-panel wooden windows. Most of these I will be using just as they are and remounting them elsewhere but a few will need to be trimmed to smaller sizes (straight edges only -- no fancy curves thank goodness). Can anyone give me some tips on how to use this thing to score the glass and how to actually break the glass? The directions on the cutter package were almost non-existent and even though I'm pretty handy with most tools I'm nervous about this one. It said to use oil to lubricate the glass but didn't specify what kind. Please help this glass cutting newbie!

Sincerely, Danielle
