Sick/Sad Peace Lily
Comments (1)Hi- I think I would go ahead and trim the limp leaves off and give the roots a chance to revive. In cutting off the distressed leaves the roots won't have to work so hard to try to heal them. In my opinion, if the leaves are limp they are probably on their way to a slow death. Sorry to hear about the poor thing tho. I just gave my 4' tall 5'wide peace lily a hair cut to get rid of the browning leaves. I hope it recovers OK. I got the plant from my grammas funeral last year and want so bad to keep it alive in her memory, so far so good, but it took me awhile to regulate the waterings thus the brom crunchy leaves. Good luck to you hope it works out OK for you....See MorePeace lily dying quickly - please help!
Comments (21)I have two Spathiphyllums that I split when they were small years ago. I had trouble with them wilting as well when I first got them. Either the pot is too small or too big. Never repot a plant in a pot over 1 1/2 inches bigger than the existing pot. I put mine in a big pot twice the size of the poor plant, I had no experience with plants back then, and the plant never got any bigger and it wilted. Turns out the soil around the root ball was staying wet and the roots were starting to rot. I split the plant and put them in different pots and now they are so big I have to buy huge pots for them. They are at the point of being split more than once each. I give them lots of fertilzer and water then regularly. More in the summer time but I keep mine out on the porch when it's warm out. The indoor temperature effects them as well. If where they are right now is cool from the AC they need less water. If the heater is on they will need more. To check your plants to see if they are thirsty put your pointer finger in the soil one inch. If it is dry to the tip of your finger water the plant. If it is moist they are ok for that time. Light: these plants need medium light (no direct sunlight- they will burn and turn brownish gray) and need to be away from drafts - AC vents, doors and open windows. Make sure you don't have root-rot going on or nematodes...if you have these evil pests kill the plant and burn it...nematodes can live in dry foliage and soil for over a year! Prun away any dead or dieing foliage because that way the nutrtion will be going to the healthy stems instead. Make sure the soil is well drained and there is a drain hole in the bottom of your pot. DO NOT let the plant sit in water in a saucer because that's where the salts from the soil drain to. If you let the plant sit in it the plant with suck back up these harmful salts. After each watering empty the saucer. Watering overhead is better than watering from the saucer. The suction from the water pulls the salts from the soil into the saucer making the plant healthier... you may have a salt build up killing your Spath. And with the roots Peace Lilies will survive in plain water as long as they are fed fertilizer, half the roots are out of the water (oxygen) and the other half is in the water (water and nutrition). I love Peace Lilies and this is what I have learned over the years about these magnificent plants. (Besides taking a college coarse on interior plants)I hope my info helps. Good Luck with your plants!!!...See Moresad looking peace lily
Comments (16)Yellowing leaves might mean not enough water. Brown tips mean there isn't enough humidity. Peace lilies like it humid. Mist the plant with water once a day, or put it on a dish filled with gravel and filled with water (the gravel keeps the roots from rotting). Another way is double potting it. I put my potted 4" peace lily in another 8" container and filled the outer layer with peat moss and kept the peat moss damp. The water evaporates and raises the humidity around the plant. My peace lily really loved this and was 60% bigger than another peace lily that I didn't do this to. I only had one spare container. lol...See MoreSad Peace Lily. Need advice
Comments (8)When you water it, do you flush out the entire pot? Or do you only give it small amounts, so that it doesn't drain through? It looks like it's not getting watered properly, causing mineral buildup within the soil. That's most likely why its leaves are turning brown along the edges. Judging from your photos, the soil looks way too dry. If it were my plant, I would soak the entire pot in water all the way up to the soil line. After about an hour, I would drain the water away and then flush it with plenty of fresh water until the murky water runs clear out of the drainage holes. This would help to remove most of the minerals that have accumulated within the soil. This, however, is just a quick short term fix. I would repot it with some fresh soil as soon as possible; using a fast-draining soil that doesn't stay soggy, such as a mix designed for cacti & succulents. With the sun getting lower on the horizon, I would move it closer to a window that receives plenty of filtered sunlight. It needs to gather up as much energy as it can to recover, and it can only do that thru photosynthesis....See MoreGrowHappy
