How to keep the dogs out of my fruit?

This year, my three year old nectarine and peach trees finally had more than a couple fruits on them and I was anticipating finding out what they tasted like.

Well, my dog decided early on they needed some thinning out. He started with they were the size of almonds and continued until they were hard baseball size. I finally had to pick the rest of the green fruit before he plugged up his system with the harder seeds. He wound up getting 95% of the fruit.

Now, in anticipation of a great crop next year, what can I do to keep him out of the trees? (Short of shooting him, that is!) They are not in a spot to be conveniently fenced off and I have a low canopy because I do summer pruning to keep the trees low, which makes it easy for him to access the fruit. Penning him up all summer isn't an option either.

Anyone have this problem and handled it without killing the dog? Any ideas, anyone?
