When will this heat wave goes away?

It has been six weeks now the weather is in the 90-100's without any rain. The grounds are crack open. I have not seen this kind of hot and bone dry since the Willie Nelson Farm Aids in the mid 80's.

I'm just 30 mi North of Omaha, so I know what you're talking about Tony.

According to Weather.com, we average 4.38" of rain for the month of July & this month we've had 0.01".
That coupled with the scorching heat is really taking a toll on things.

Two things have impressed me to no end though.... my 5 Carmine Jewel cherry bushes and my 2 Saskatoon (June Berry) seem virtually unaffected by it all. (The June Berries were planted this year too!) And like I noted in my other post, the row of Heritage raspberries are doing real well too.

But in looking at the timberline as I drink my morning coffee and I see mature Oak & Ash trees turning yellow & brown. I don't know if it's the drought conditions or if it's just what they usually do about a month to six weeks from now as they get ready for winter...

That wouldn't surprise me really, given how out of sync things have been this year. (I planted potatoes and bush beans the middle of March!!!)

Maybe we just need to get out there and do a li'l rain dance Tony.

When?

The Euro shows some relief for you a week from now...

Who knows if its short lived or not.

Karyn, I'm glad you had a wonderfully warm day. We had a great week. We went from -41 deg F as a low one day to 43 deg F as a high the next day and has been in the 30's all week. I saw the SUN....it was an exciting momentous week to have that beautiful sun warm everything up. My plants in the greenhouse and seedlings are LOVING this beautiful weather. For those of you who read my distressed email about my seeds not sprouting and thinking I killed them with my accidental spraying of rubbing alcohol, bleach and detergent. WELL...they are sprouting to beat the band. Just wanted to let everyone know in case it happened to any of you. yeah right! Jeep, you are right, we did not have any snow last year and have 63" on the ground right now. It's wonderful. I hope it melts slowly so that the moisture is retained in the gardens rather than running down to a low spot only to create a slough filled with water. Hope everyone stays warm. ~Tj~

Dave: Thanks for the update - it is encouraging and a relief. I was concerned about the loss of leaves so early in the season. When a hurricane or TS comes through, it strips the leaves from trees but this happens later in the season. I used to worry but the trees come back, often stronger than before. In September, a tropical storm hit and stripped the leaves off the persimmons that grow in beach sand, added more than a foot of sand around the trunks - and turned the fruit ripe. The orange fruit hung on the leafless tree like Christmas balls. I took this photo the next day; That persimmon has grown at least 2 feet since the storm. Re: water bills. Thankfully, I have a crock well for watering. We built a rainwater catchment system for the house - water quality is excellent and the water is free. I found the device you recommended. My husband invents new things and improves old things. He may be able to make a similar device that will do the trick. Thanks for the progress report and advice. i.) Try to post a pic (helps with determining pot size dimensions) ii.) Now a personal RANT: One of my pet peeves is commercial mixes--they can be HORRIBLE! MG sells a potting soil that is virtually PEAT MOSS. I made a big MISTAKE using this disastrous product years ago and I am STILL working to improve the soil. The soil just bakes in the heat and once it is dry, it is virtually impossible to rehydrate. When a soil gets to the point that it virtually repels water it is said to be 'hydrophobic'. You could stand there with the hose forever and the soil remains BONE DRY. Last few days, I have been working to improve the soil in my entire collection (especially for the citrus and palms), by adding humus and coast sand--seems to be working. I know you purchased the 'cactus and soil mix' but I have found this product to nearly as peaty as the standard mix.--Which is absolutely RIDICULOUS for cacti, succulents or citrus. I purchase the MG product of standard soil and essentially use it as PEAT MOSS--again mixing it with good quality humus and coarse sand (don't use the sand marketed as Tropical Play Sand. You can get coarse sand at HD in the construction section--it'll say multipurpose and include gardening uses. iii.) If you have never fed, this may be a big part of the problem, especially since your mix probably peat heavy and STERILE. iv.) How do you define "good sun"? v.) How much watering is "a lot"? Also, how long has it been it's current pot and location. Sometimes, plants appear to be doing nothing but actually growing roots and preparing for a growth spurt! Happy palm gardening!

Jen, WOW..WOW..WOW.. 2 posts in a row lol. Your on a roll, you must be on vacation, or maybe since your babies are getting ready for their naps you have more time lol... J/K ;P I was told by an importer and seller of Thai plumies, that no plumie in Thailand is an exclusive as there is so much theft as most of the growing fields are acres and acres of land, in some cases over 40 plus acres. Even if someone like JJ or Kukiat has a seedling that blooms that they own, a worker/random person/even friend of the owner may steal/get a branch or the whole plant. That is why you see so many plumies that are supposedly exclusive 1 of a kind plumies, being sold by another seller or a few from Thailand selling them on Ebay and other places and with different names. Example is Fireblast being imported and sold by BBB this season on Ebay, there is also another seller from Thailand that sells it for under 20.00 under a Thai name, not Fireblast. This seller sells legit items as I have bought from them in the past and has been on Ebay forever. A friend of mine bought hers 2 yrs ago or so from this seller in Thailand and her FB bloomed true for the past 2 seasons. With Thai Peach it was a JJ's exclusive in Thailand. Per John the Mother tree was either lost/stolen or destroyed. Since 2005, I have seen a few Thai Peaches being sold on Ebay from Thailand, but not sure it is the same as plumie photos from there look different than the ones grown here. All I know is that Sonia did more to market, sale/distribute JJ's Thai Peach than anyone else. In 2005 Sonia bought out all the Thai Peachs from John that she could find (5gal multi tipped plumies for 55.00 back then from JJ's). Sonia then resold the Thai Peach's and cuttings to other people. Thats how I got mine in 2005 (5gal was about 4ft, multi tipped) along with the Morgan's and many in the Inland Empire area. Sonia also sold stuff on Ebay, so I am pretty sure the one Lopaka has is from Sonia aka JJ's variety. As for Brads I am not sure if that is one of JJ's/Sonia's Thai Peaches. Sonia actually got the name Thai peach from the Thai Ebay sellers in 2005 as it looked like their TP, Sonia in the early years helped John with a few names for his plumies like Golden Ray, Thai Peach, Big Red and others. Since Thai Peach was a good seller and Sonia and other bought out Johns (jjs) inventory, John went to Thailand to replenish his inventory he stated that he could not find the Mother tree of TP. So since John could not replenish TP, and did not even have one for himself, what ever is currently being sold privately and @ Plumie Society sales are most likely recirculated JJ's TP from people who had it or got it from Sonia or a few who had it still. I gave a bunch of large multi tipped cuttings to Irene Jones a few years back as my tree blew over and had all these branches break. I do know that Irene was selling some at the SD Plumie Society sale recently. So again do not know if Brads is the same as JJ's. So as of current Thai peach is not commercially avail, so you will never see it at Lowes or HD. PHEW.... I am about 2 hrs or so north of you and its bone dry here and has been real hot , the trees are dropping leaves , lilocs look dead . I told thewife I wasn't real sure spending all the $$ on water was worth it but I can't just let my berries and othere plants just die either

I am in central ne, west of St Paul. Not only did I miss the July rain but also June. It has now been 64 days without measureable precip. Pastures are brown, my corn will not pay to combine. It will rain again someday it always has.

I feel very bad for all of you.
We are some what use to the heat, but we broke many high temp.records this year and its very hard on the gardens and fruit trees. We are finally getting our monsoons and it is helping, but the gardens are coming in real late for everyone. I am just now getting some tomatoes. Saving money on water is real hard. In the past I have used the water when I take a shower. It can get a little crowed with the 5 gl bucket, but can save small plants. Hope this helps and good luck to everyone

I am in central ne, west of St Paul. Not only did I miss the July rain but also June. It has now been 64 days without measureable precip. Pastures are brown, my corn will not pay to combine. It will rain again someday it always has.

Tony, I suggest that you move to God's country here in the mountains of Tn., that way I could help you eat all the persimmons that you grow.

Looks like some relief on the way...Sunday the high temp here is suppose to be 77F and not much warmer on Monday... The Euro (wx model) is showing another shot of cool weather for the midwest midweek... Looks like finally I get some good biking/gardening wx...

In our locale the NWS has reported we've received 5.88" of rain for the 4 month period beginning April 1st thru July 31. I don't think we've even received that much rain out at the farm.

Keep in mind we normally average more than 5" per month for that period. On top of that the temps have been way above normal for that period with lots of wind, which compounds the situation. We are currently under a D3 "extreme" drought.

That is crazy. I think its bad here and since April 1st, I've had right around 13 inches of precip in my yard. I've been watering a lot again lately although we did pick up a little rain this morning.

We had the hottest July on record here...beating out July 1936.

5.88" over that period is way more than my garden has received in SE MI. Granted, we have been unlucky. The guy who sells a steer to our meat club is some 60 miles N of here and he is getting new growth, and there was rain S of here too. I only have two small side beds that are not on drip, and those are deader than Elvis.

No rain insight yet, but this weekends a little milder in the high 80's. Next week the 90-100's will return. Can't wait until fall begins.

Yeah I think we've been unlucky at our small farm too and actually haven't received the amount of rain the NWS is reporting. A few months ago the NWS station at Pleasant Hill MO (closest station to me) received almost a 3" rain and we received only 1/4" at the farm for that rain.

I think our rain at the farm is closer to the 3" mark for the last 4 months. Some parts of MO are in a D4 drought, which is as high as the drought ratings go.

Last week I heard one of the weathermen saying this was the hottest summer on record for the KC area.

Just noticed the forecast in our area doesn't show a single day above 100F for the next 7 days. I think this is the first time I've seen this since the extreme heat started in June.

Someone recently sent me an email about Chemtrails,which come from jets that are releasing things into the air.I've never heard of it before.
I checked online and found some videos on Youtube about it.Most of it appears to be Aluminum,but there are other chemicals like Strontium and Barium.
I told a coworker and he found a whole page of listed things.
It's so new to me,but apparently has been going on for decades.There are reasons suggested in a video,like trying to control the weather,to making money or population control.
There are two main videos out called,Why in the World are They Spraying? and What in the World are They Spraying.
I've been thinking about this weird weather and this is one of the things that came to mind. Brady

In RI, far away from the midwest, we have had no rain in Newport. My tomatoes are turning yellow and will only have one crop. My new trees are being hand watered, as I have no water out to my orchard. This is terribly minor compared to you all. I am so sympathetic. What a summer. Great for melons and not much else. Mrs. G
