my bed to bench

My hubby made me this bench, from a metal toddler foot and head board. The wooden seat is lacking something. Any suggestions? It'll be outside.

What a sweet DH. I think if another board was put across the front or under it, it would look more substantial and it would also give support to the wood. You know like on a book shelf, you put a board across to keep the shelf from sagging. but I like the metal in green. And you can put any color or print cushion on it for comfort. Great bench. June

Cute bench! Once you place it outside with plants and flowers around it, it won't look as if it is lacking anything. A colorful pillow you can bring in and out will soften the look, too. Great job!

Thanks everyone! Kudzo - Do you mean the vine behind the bench on the trellis? That's an Akiba quinata (or something like that), chocolate vine. The flowers are supposed to smell like chocolate and I'm waiting for it to flower to see if that's true. Katladie - I'm in a little town in Victoria. Toowoomba is kinda far away. hehe Luvs - those names are GREAT!!! I especially love Dragon's Drive. You have me trying to figure out how I can add another path to the garden so I can use that name! HA! I may also now have to make a path to the garden so I can have an Excalibur Expressway! I am thinking of putting in a little pond in so I can have the Lady of the Lake! HA!! The fun never ends! I want to thank you all for your suggestions and close out this thread. I've moved into my house with the furniture I have, and this has allowed me to see what I need and what could work. One thing I've learned is that I'm really lacking in storage space. So now I'm obsessed with the idea of storage ottomans and tables. To that end, here's what I plan to do. (Sorry that my sketching isn't as nice as your models!) Add a counter-height table / island along the open wall space in the kitchen. The ideal one would have drawers, shelves, or cabinet space and also be able to accommodate 4-6 counter-height chairs (or maybe a banquette and several stools), or better yet, be expandable. This would be my primary dining area. Get rid of my current glass-top dining set and move my beloved coffee table to its spot, where the kitchen opens into the living room. Get four ottoman / cushions with storage. This will be casual tea time seating or extra entertaining space. Place a new sofa along the long wall for my primary lounging space. Full length (not apartment size) I think would work as long as the seat depth is relatively shallow. Buy a long, narrow storage ottoman / coffee table to go in front of the sofa. The ideal ottoman / coffee table would also be able to serve as extra seating for larger gatherings. Keep one of my benches under the front window. That's where it is now, and I think it works quite well there. The other bench is upstairs at the foot of my bed. The window bench in theory is my current lounging spot, but in reality is a really fancy dog bed, LOL. With this plan, I could seat about 15 people for casual gatherings and have plenty of standing room space. That's more than sufficient for me.

That pink plaid is adorable, and I have actually looked at it and at some fabric with muted white dots on a pink background. The more I look at fabrics the more I think I want either a solid blue or a textured blue of some sort, or possibly a white embroidered in blue. I think I may go to Etsy and Ebay to look for embroidered linens I could use. Lascatx, I bookmarked that linen For possible use in another room. It’s a great neutral that still has a pattern 🙂 My guiding principle for this house is “more solids, less pattern.” I went totally off the rails in DS2’s bedroom with a buffalo check AND a mattress ticking, like I could not help it, But while I really like a great mix of pattern and color to look at I am LOVING living with less pattern, with blocks of color instead. Is it odd that i like something different than what I want to live in? ETA. Mimou I think noth colors would actually work but the fabrics themselves are a little more tailored than I am seeking,

I've used those cheap bed pillows from walmart or dollar store (5 bucks) for benches/swings...and I just buy a pillow case/sham that is made to look like a quilt to cover it...gives it a really nice country look.
I'm curious to as to how you attached the arms to the headboard.

Your DH did a fabulous job. I love the color and as the gals say a nice cushion will brighten it up. I hope the tips I sent you helped.

Halleyrose, Darling bench! DH is a "Keeper". That will look so cute in the gardens. I have a luv for garden benches and sitting areas amongst the flowers. Little nooks where one can sit and enjoy all the garden junk and the flowers popping up all around. Your bench is just the right size for snuggling up into the flowers. Good Job DH.

Haley...must husband said to tell you thanks. I showed him the picture of your bench and told him I wanted one...so he says now he has an excuse to go get a new mig welder! lol. I guess the one he has isn't the right one. Hmmm. He's welded lots of other stuff....hey, I think he's pulling my leg just so he can get a new one!!! LOL...I think I just taught him a new trick!! hahaha
