Calathea Roseopicta Medallion around Toronto

Does anyone know where I can find Calathea Roseopicta Medallion around Toronto, Canada? I saw some pictures of it on this forum and fell in love! Problem is, I can't seem to find it anywhere in local garden centers. Even the web wasn't that helpful. Is it really an uncommon houseplant, or is Toronto weather just not good for it?
I'd appreciate any info you could share. Thanks!

This may or may not help.

Go to gardenwatchdog. Once you're on the home page, scroll down. You should see, 'Browse by North American State/Province.'
Click on the arrow, 'right side,' until you find Ontario.

A list of nurseries will display.

Some nurseries may not be in business, but usually GWD will state, out of business, etc.

Another option is here on GardenWeb.

Go to Other Forums, which is on the upper-left-hand corner of each forum.

A list of forums will pop up.

Click on 'Regional Forums.' Scrool down until you see 'Gardening in Canada.'
I've never been to the Canada Forum, but maybe you'll find neighbors who collect indoor plants, including Calatheas.

Thanks, Toni! I found the list of nurseries from your instructions. I'll make some phone calls and hopefully I'll get lucky :)

i don't think over watering has ever been my problem. It's much easier to save a plant from under watering as over watering. I tend to only lose plants when I forget to water them not drown them. That statement reminded me of something that happened to me a couple of years ago. I used to work as head of landscaping for a 132 bed Christian retreat center when I wasn't doing housekeeping or working in the kitchen. Anyway one week my husband's sister and 8 of her 10 children came to visit and stayed with us for a kids camp. My know it all niece was talking to me as I was watering some mint plants and she told me I shouldn't water my plants every day that they would drown. When it's 113 degrees outside in August in a drought there is little chance of anything drowning. She also told me that no plant would survive with the amount of water I was giving them. I asked her if that applied to plants that live in the water also. She was tongue tied after that. She had no idea that there were plants that lived in water or moist soil. Aunt 1, Child 0

Mike- I'm assuming you mean the aerial roots? :p I would use a small spray bottle but I lost mine a few months ago...it just simply vanished one day and I couldn't find it. Now, I just take the white pot the orchid sits in, fill up with water, dip my fingers in (wash hands before :p), and carefully drip water on the roots so that they turn green. I have a paper towel nearby in case water gets in between the area where the leaf meets the stem. It's getting really dry in my house right now and as a result the aerial roots are shriveling a bit. I've been doing my best to drip as much as possible to keep them from dessicating. It seems to be working okay so far :p

Finally, I think I've got it : Roseopicta "Illustris" (the top plant) That's the consensus anyway, which is good enough for me. It was driving me crazy, not being able to find the answer to a basic (and not very important) question. Doesn't change anything - they're still tricky plants to keep happy. Just as well they're gorgeous! Good luck with your plant. Given that your other three look well, I would imagine that with the same sort of care (type of potting mix, way of watering etc), your new one will come right in time.

my zebra plant dropped the top 2 new leaves!! I’ve been keeping it moist and I know it is moist because the water keeps draining of out the pot. Then yesterday, I withheld some water because I thought I might be overwatering this plant because the tips are turning brown and the leaves are yellowing. Not sure if it’s due to the pesticide but it’s an organic pesticide so it shouldnt i guess. So I thought maybe I overwatered. The soil is still moist throughout the day but it suddenly dropped 1 new leaf. then I watered and this morning another leaf was dropped. what might have caused it?

I found these 2 little guys on clearance today - both were marked tropical foliage. One on the right doesn't look like Roseopicta Medallion but I think it might be another variety of Calathea. Any help in ID'ing it would be greatly appreciated :)

Jansy. First plant is Pothos.
Third plant is Maranta, Prayer Plant.
Marantas and Calatheas are closely related, but I realize you're seeking an actual Calathea.

Thanks, Toni. It does look like I'm getting close :)
I added my name to "plant books" at nurseries for a call when they get it in stock. Although, it looks like at this time they're focused on clearing out their stock - hence the generalized labels? So I'll keep searching the clearance racks around garden centers.
Oddly enough, I found Calathea posters for sale on ebay/amazon and not actual plants!
In the meantime, I really like Maranta a lot. It's lovely to see it expand in the morning and "go to sleep" in the evenings.
