Comments (9)For milk stage corn, the easiest way to tell is to feel of the tip of the ear. If it is plump and full, then the ear is filled out enough for fresh eating. If you want it to get to the dough stage, then you have to let it go 5 to 7 days past the edible stage. From looking at your pictures, your corn is NOT ready. Comments (15)Another sign to look for on the bottom yellow area are very tiny specks of black dots clustered together. These are mildew spots no bigger than a period at end of a sentence and they won't rub off like specks of soil. These black dots form when the melons has been sitting for a long time, long enough to be ripe if not over ripe. Also when checking the tendril observe the leafs closest to the melon on the vine. If the leaves look vibrant and healthy then it may be too early, if the leaves are somewhat ragged looking then it's may be ripe, it's a good confirmation combo with the brown tendril. The shine of a new melon fades to dull when ripe too and the afore mentioned lumpiness on large melons is a winner. Hi Wayne, it's been a while, thanks again for the Raspa melon tip several years ago, they have served me well with bountiful sweetness. Comments (15)The first time I noticed the berries on my aronia bushes I went to Google to see if they were edible. Much to my amazement, it was called a superfood, so I decided to go out and pick them the next day and try making something with them. However, by the next morning every one was gone. Here in northern Wisconsin we have a lot of migrating birds and also black bears that could have been the culprit, so I am very nervous about letting the berries stay on the bush too long, but have succeeded in harvesting them in recent years. I too have searched for ways to make them taste good. I have made jams and pies and syrups, but none were particularly tasty. I've thrown a handful in to a smoothie, where the bitter taste is masked by other ingredients, but I just can't use that many in this way. This summer I was looking for a way to use the two gallons of berries I had in the freezer from last year and discovered that they make a wonderful shrub drink made with sweetened aronia juice and preserved with apple cider vinegar. A couple of ounces of shrub over ice with sparkling water and an orange slice garnish makes a delicious, adult-tasting drink. Comments (14)My MIL, bless her heart and RIP, used to grow all her zukes and summer squash until they looked like ballbats. I couldn't eat them. You don't want seeds in them to be like sunflower seeds. The thing is, zucchini and cukes are prolifically bearing plants. They come on so heavily that you can't give them away, so there is no reason to NOT pick them when the peel is tender and the seeds tiny. There will be plenty more coming on. The flesh on the young ones is more juicy, firmer, and cooks up better. It's really off-putting to make a nice ratatouille and see big, hard seeds floating around in the broth....See Morelsoh
