How do I stop Tidal Wave petunias from self sowing?
Comments (6)seeds are not.. by definition .. winter hardy ... some are some arent.... have you ever seen an impatiens seedling??? but i have a carpet of alysum [sp] seedlings every spring ... the examples are endless ... what do you grow that does and doesnt winter over its seed???? if the generic petunia were winter seed hardy .... then i would have seen seedlings for every year since mom planted the first ones in 1965 ... i think in the ensuing years.. i MIGHT have seen one seedling ... near a chimney, where the soil stayed warmer all winter .... again .... i dont see why any other type of petunia would be seed hardy .. since .. most likely.. they all came genetically.. from the generic .. subject to any seed scientist correcting me ... ken...See MoreLettuce, spinach, carrots have stopped growing
Comments (8)Was this a 'topsoil' you bought to fill the bed, or 'compost', or a mix? Does it have any nutrients added, like compost or manure? Call the place and ask for some specific information. If there's not much in the way of nutrients (if they can even tell you), you'll have to add some. A mix of alfalfa meal (nitrogen), wood fireplace ash (potash), and bone meal (phosphorus) should get you started. A little kelp meal wouldn't hurt, but don't overdo it. Figure out how much you would likely need for the whole bed, mix it all together in a bucket, and gently work it into the soil around the plants. It doesn't have to go right up to their stems, the roots will reach out for it. But you can't just lay it on top, unfortunately. The carrots wouldn't mind a little extra dusting of ash right around them, they like it, and it will help keep prevent carrot rust flies and wireworms. And like the others above have pointed out, give them a dose of patience, too. Sometimes the tops stop growing, but the roots are going like crazy. Sue...See More1 month old spinach plants...bolting?
Comments (5)Yeah I'm going to leave them be for now. My house is probably about 70 degrees on average now; we still have the heat "on" but it rarely does kick on, as it's been in the mid-60's lately. My set-up is in this small room off of the living room -- it is a bricked-up all seasons room. It is not insulated but it does have two vents to bring in the heat and A/C during the summer. So basically it is probably a few degrees cooler than the rest of the house. Should I take my spinach (and the other lettuces I'm growing) out from under the lights and place them elsewhere for an even shorter exposure?...See MoreSnow and spinach--what do I do?
Comments (34)Hialt, I have built some very simple and low retaining walls along one side of a sidewalk. The ground slopes and I put steps in the walk every 8 feet. The low walls match the steps in the flower beds. In other words, the steps are only about 8" high, so the walls are only about 8" high (but extend into the ground for another 4 - 6 inches. I dug a trench about 6 inches down and 18 inches wide I think my walls are about 5 feet long. Laid stones the size of cantaloupes in the bottom of the trench in 3 rows. On these 3 rows of melon-sized stones, I laid 2 rows of stones, on those 2 rows, I laid 1 row. Between each layer, I shoveled in some pre-mix concrete. The concrete works better for me with these rough stones than mortar. Thats all there was to it. The stones are basalt which is very easy to find around here. Youll hear how you need to pour a footing of concrete before you build your stone wall - - but, my "stone wall" is only 12 or 14 inches tall. They've been there about 10 years and frost has never moved them. Rows of 3 stones, 2 stones, 1 stone - bags of premix concrete, a little water and then stir with a hoe, shovel between layers of stone - - easy, peasy. Skybird, here's my problem with pelleted lettuce seed (which tends to be limited in selection) - we have too much fun ordering the beautiful varieties: Nevada Slobolt Red Ruffled Oaks Green Ice Salad Bowl Buttercrunch Nancy Territorial Salad Blend Johnny's Mix theres more, but Ive forgotten And, I'm much more of a stir fry guy than a salad lad. So, then there are the Asian greens . . . Thteve (Actually, I spoke with a lisp until I was eleven and had to work really, really hard to leave it behind. The little girl who took therapy with me, never did accomplish it even tho she was twice as smart as I was and a lot cuter . . . :o)...See Morealiceinvirginia
