1 month old spinach plants...bolting?

So my two "baby" spinach plants have formed (are forming?) what looks to be a flower in the middle. They are tiny, I just noticed them today. I must admit that I didn't think much of how the hours of light may vary greatly between different plants :/

Anyways, what should I do about my spinach plants, if anything? I have lots more seeds so I could always start again. How many hours under my grow lights should they get?

As of right now I tend to turn the lights on when I wake up (8 am or later) and turn the lights off around midnight. I have two shelves which each have 4 t-12 lights, with two warm and two cool lights a piece.

I also have a few more baby spinach plants that are only about two weeks old. Should I start giving those reduced lighting? Is 16 hours under the shop lights TOO much?

The problem is probably heat. Spinach likes cool weather and bolts when it's warm. If you can keep the grow room something like 60 degrees during the day and 50 at night, you'll probably have better luck. A small fan with an open window nearby might help.

Another possibility is that you're growing them in containers that are too small. Start them in small cells and then transplant them (after teasing out the outer roots) to a 6" pot. I'd still harvest them within 45 days or so, because even outdoors in cool weather spinach is fairly short-lived.

Well, 2-4 weeks old is pretty early for the plants to bolt -- they probably have no more than a few leaves! Let them grow a little longer and see if the "flower" stalk is just a stem making leaves.

This morning when I check the box, all culantro seeds in the towel germinated overnight. So far 100% of culantro seeds from evergreenseeds germinated. One malabar seed germinated out of 20 so there's still hope. I guess maybe both culantro and malabar prefer a little higher temperature than 70F so they took longer to sprout. Aubade, I've never heard of coco coir until your post. I should try it next time. Thanks!

Thanks for all the great feedback! "Have you tried chard instead?" Swiss chard is an outstanding crop in its own right, as is kale. I am currently growing Bright Lights and Giant Fordham Swiss chard, and red Russian kale. As a spinach replacement, chard and kale can only go so far. There is nothing that matches the buttery, silky goodness of spinach. "Have you considered growing indoors?" Pardon the pun, but this is a bright idea. I can set up 4Â double strip shop lights for $20 a pop. I have a fairly bright south facing fishroom that I use for seed starting in the winter as well. It would be a slight adjustment to utilize the room for year round plant growout. "We try to eat seasonally." Yes, I am thankful for anything that the good earth gives me. But at the same time most of us like tomatoes on a salad even though lettuce is a cool weather crop and tomatoes are warm weather crops. Neither one will ever be at their peak seasonally, at the same time here in So.Cal. Gardening is a form of cheating in a way. We constantly look to extend growing seasons and maximize yields. We are "leveraging" the abilities of plants for our benefit, often times stretching the limits of certain crops. IÂm full onboard with pushing the limits of spinach. "Maybe in Southern California a shadecloth covered tunnel would be advantageous to cut down on the heat." That, or maybe limiting the plants to morning exposure. I've had my best results with portable shallow wide containers. But any old hot spell will twart my best efforts. :) This year I tried Bloomsdale that is touted as being slow to bolt. Well it sprouted, sent out two or three leaves and then shot up seed stalks. I pinched the stalks and now they are doing fairly nicely. Maybe this will be the year for spinach...

Several plants???? When it starts growing, if you like the taste, you'll have plenty with either 1 or 2 plants. I always picked the smallest leaves figuring they were the most tender. Wasn't tempted to leave them longer and try the older/bigger leaves, maybe that was my problem! If you don't like the taste, yank them before they start blooming and setting seed because they reseeded prolifically from my one plant here in Houston! I hope you like it! If not, it's at least a pretty vine!

kvetchlambkin, thanks for the kind words. When I first started gardening a few years ago I knew pretty much nothing about it. Everything I read talked about the importance of compost, so I started researching how to make compost. If I remember correctly one of the better articles was "compost 101" just google and you will find a ton of info. I always preferred the "hot method". This method gives you usable compost in a fairly quick time frame. To start with you need a lot of leaves. In the fall when people start bagging up their leaves I would go around and collect them before the city picked them up. I met with people and asked permission and asked questions about what if any pesticides they used and stuff like that. Also no leaves from walnut trees. I would dump a bunch of them on the ground and mow them up with a push mower until they were chopped up pretty fine. Start with a layer of that, then add a layer of greens, like left over plants out of the garden, grass clippings and stuff like that, then a layer of chicken manure, throw in some wood ashes, etc etc. There is a lot of stuff that is good for composting and a lot of stuff that is not. I would build my piles in layers with chopped up stuff, adding in "hot stuff". After it sits a few days it heats up and gets pretty hot. After a week or so goes by it cools back down. After the pile cooled down, I took a pitch fork and put the top third in a separate pile, the middle third in another pile. Then make a new pile...what was the top becomes the middle, the middle becomes the bottom and what was the bottom is now the top of the new pile. It heats back up and cools back down. Repeat this a few times and you end up with some really good compost in a short amount of time. Chopping everything up makes things go a lot faster. It's really interesting and there are many other methods also. Just google it and you will get a ton of info. Make a bunch of piles and you will develop muscles in places you didn't know you had! lol Hope this helps. Angela

Yeah I'm going to leave them be for now. My house is probably about 70 degrees on average now; we still have the heat "on" but it rarely does kick on, as it's been in the mid-60's lately. My set-up is in this small room off of the living room -- it is a bricked-up all seasons room. It is not insulated but it does have two vents to bring in the heat and A/C during the summer. So basically it is probably a few degrees cooler than the rest of the house.

Should I take my spinach (and the other lettuces I'm growing) out from under the lights and place them elsewhere for an even shorter exposure?

I had the same thing happen to a few of my spinach plants. They would rather be 40 degrees than 70 degrees, so if it is feasible, put them outside.

I planted my spinach seedlings this weekend in a raised bed that I can cover with plastic if it gets to cold. As I was putting them in, I noticed that the 2-3 largest plants looked to be putting out flowers. I ate them, and planted the rest. I assumed it was a combination of to small a pot and to much heat.

Well I'm going to call it an experiment, and not plant any more of the spinach seeds I have now. Instead, I ordered some "New Zealand Spinach" seeds, after researching about the plant. I've never tasted this particular plant's leaves before, but it does well during warmer times and, bonus! a lot of people say it is very like Spinach, and some even think it tastes better. I also purchased several varieties of lettuce seeds that are known to do better during summer months and are slow to bolt, as it were.
