Strawberries in a haning basket/ Runners???

I bought everbearing strawberries in a hanging basket. They continue to set fruit, and there are a lot of runners. The runners hang down at least 2.5 feet. Is there a way to sever the runners and plant them in the ground. I will probably just pitch the hanging basket when winter gets here. I garden in a very small place, but thought I might find room for a few of the runners.

You can root the runners from your hanging baskets, but you will somehow have to get some small pots up to the level of the runners and keep them there.

Strawberry runners will root below the rosette of leaves that forms at the end of the runner, but in order to do so they must be in contact with moist soil. They will not root while hanging out in the air.

Once the runners have rooted you can cut them off and carefully transplant the resulting plant to a bed. But if you cut off the runners without rooting them beforehand, they will die.

Either cut them off, or get another basket full of dirt and plant the runner in it if you want more strawberry plants.

I don't know if they will bloom the first year. I intend to seperate my seed pack into four parts as a trial. 1. Winter Sow into a milk jug with about 4 inches of soil. 2. Immediate sow into starter pack things (like square peat pots but more eco friendly if you beleive the advertising). 3. Stick it in the freezer for a month and then decide. 4. Reserve to throw into the garbage at some point in the future after the seeds fall out of the opened poorly resealed package. Frecklesb

I have Pink Lipstick (same species as Pink Panda) and it's ornamental as well. Occasionally we get the berries before the bugs and the birds but we use this more as an ornamental ground cover. They ~seem~ to make more berries when they are potted up but that may be an access issue as far as critters are concerned. Either way, it isn't enough of a difference to make me want to grow them in pots. They are pretty in baskets though!
