My First Australian Tree Fern

Hi Everyone,

OK, I'm new to the site and never have participated in a forum, so be gentle....lol.

I just bought my first ATF, its a newbie, only a foot tall or so and was wonderin' .....Should I keep it potted, or plant it in the ground in shade ? I live in Central Florida just south of Orlando. We have hot humid summers and mild winters with occasional frost. I think I'm in ZONE 9.

So any info, or input would be greatly appreciated.....I wanna give this ATF everything within my means to keep it happy and healthy !!!

Welcome to GW, Huckleberry..Oh I love ATF's..they're really gorgeous ferns..If this plant is hardy to your area, I'd plant in the ground..No doubt about that..
They love moisture, humidity, and some light.
When you purchased the fern, did you ask if it was hardy to your area?
I basically wanted to reply stating IMO I think it'd do best in the ground, but perhaps, someone else will know about its hardiness..
BTW, how many days per yr do u have frost? And how cold does it get? Toni

My one australian tree fern is doing well. I am in San Francisco. They may not be getting enough light and root space. My tree fern takes up much root space, and I apply top compost dressing often. It's hard to find something to fill in the deep shade. Ferns are fussy and difficult. I would suggest other shade plants not ferns. Mimulus, for example, can take the shade of other plants, and will work as a ground cover. Can you post a photo of the area?

Same experience as above growers/posters: grows well in part shade, lots of water. I lost two due to not watering enough when I first planted. The next two have done great and endured the winter no problem (on the coldest night, I did cover them with, though they were a bit too big for that to be easy :)) Olya
