Carludovica - Jungle Drum

Yesterday I ran across the Carludovica (Jungle Drum) at one of the local nurseries near my home. I have never seen one sold here before. ItÂs a really nice looking plant. I didnÂt pick one up but IÂm debating going back for it. Is anyone growing one of these plants? Are they relatively undemanding?

I have one now. I was expecting it to be difficult, but so far it's been a pretty undemanding plant: the only time it's approached throwing a fit about something was when I let it get too dry. Keep it in bright light, and water when the top inch or two gets dry, and it should be fine.

Sorry for taking so long to come back and "THANK YOU" for taking the time to answer my question. I went back to the greenhouse that night (Friday) and was distracted by a beautiful Calathea in a 6" pot that was only about $6.00. Of course I brought it home. Today I will pass by that same greenhouse and if the Jungle Drum is still there, I will bring it home. I figure if it's waiting for me, then it's fate - we're meant to be together...LOL... Thanks again for your input :)

Drier air in winter is less comfortable than more humid air. Dry air leads to chapped or cracked skin, nosebleeds, and sinus problems. Moist air is better for plants and people alike. Also furniture. And pets. Lowering the temperature will increase the relative humidity, but it doesn't cause there to be more moisture in the air. Humidity level is defined relative to the maximum amount of water vapor that air can hold (air at 50% humidity contains half as much water vapor as it can; at 100% humidity there's nowhere for additional moisture to go, and you start to get rain or dew). Warmer air has more capacity than cooler air. Increasing humidity levels by lowering the temperature is a little bit like trying to raise a flag by lowering the pole it's attached to. Most indoor plants will do better with a lower night temperature, but most indoor plants are also tropical, so their idea of "low" isn't very cold at all (and in fact, a lot of them can be damaged by temperatures below 60F / 16C). I would not put a tropical plant on a windowsill in cold weather: leaves touching the window can be damaged, and the overall temperature tends to be much colder by a window. If it's not practical / permissible to use an actual humidifier, bringing plants home for the season, grouping several plants together or surrounding plants with damp moss or pebble trays, adding a glass or plastic cover for the plants, or using plants that don't care about humidity levels (and there are more of those than you'd think) are pretty much the only options. To answer the original question: the room I'm typing in right now is about 76F (24C) and 55% humidity. The humidity level is normal; the temperature is a little higher than usual.

I wish I could find a Kentia up where I am. All the stores seem to have is the Parlour Palm (Mr. Sub had the latin name for it...elegans) and lots of the majesties in the local Walmart. Thanks in part (I place blame) to someone else who posted on the palm forum and mentioned how he just picked up a Triangle Palm in his local Walmart, inspired me to go my Wal*Mart yesterday to check for one, so now I have one of those. Supposed to handle dry air a bit better than other varieties, but it'll be several years (or sooner) before I will know how successful of an indoor palm it will be, with light requirements and all that. I do plan to letting it live the summer outdoors, but we'll see, I don't want anyone stealing it!

I have 2 of these, I have had them for about 10 years. They are kind of slow growing, but they do get very large over time. My oldest one is about 4 ft tall and has a spread of about 3 1/2 ft, so be ready for that, LOL.

I'm just a beginner, but here's the rundown: -1 Chamaedorea Elegans, doing REALLY well although I bought it from IKEA and it didnt look the best, but now its all happy and perky. It's on top of my radiator in the bathroom and I water it every other day, it pops out fronds like its nobody's business, it also doesn't mind the dry air when I'm not showering, what a plus! it gets whatever extra fert i have left over from doing my other plants. This houseplant deserves more recognition because I give it a 5 star rating. -1 Musa Basjoo banana.its in pretty good shape, its down to 1 LEAF now because one of them burnt for a reason i still don't know why?,its putting out another one with more on the way. It puts out 1 leaf per week. I fert it once a month. This one is another great plant of mine. -1 Aechmea Fasciata. This one has had a love-hate relationship with me, but now its produced 2 pups and is powering along nicely. The pink bloom is gone, but the fountain-look and whiteness of the foliage always mesmerizes me. It takes dry air now, didnt use to. Likes tons of sun also. This one goes to the garden with the banana in the summer, because I've tipped it over as far back as I can fathom, its very top heavy so beware! But anyways now here's the list of what I've killed: -2 Sabal Palmetto seedlings. These were never ment for my house, but unknowingly I got them in November and babied them for 5 months before they bid farewell. After that I stuck em outside and let Mother Nature take over. -1 WodXVeitchia seedling. I bought this for $20 on ebay in september and It only survived until December. I think it died due to pink rot on the crownshaft. -1 Guzmania Bromeliad. I bought this at Home Depot in a 16in pot for $15 in October and it died in March. The unusual thing is that one of the old stems where the old plants were(they produced pups before this) had fell off and was missing. The plant also stopped growing and died, so again I let Mother Nature take care of it, well I can always go back to Home Depot and buy another! Thanks Home Depot!

That's actually a very similar story to how I wound up with mine. I didn't know what it was, but I saw it at Lowe's and thought, ooo, that's neat. But then I didn't buy it because I didn't know what it was and wasn't sure I'd be able to care for it well. Went back the next week and thought about it again, and again the week after that, and then finally at some point, I was like, okay, if it's there *this* time, then I'll just buy it, 'cause clearly we were meant to be together.

And it was, and we lived happily ever after. More or less. Happily, anyway.

I too brought home a jungle drum from Lowes. Sadly, it pretty much died in 2 weeks. My green thumb neighbor suggested I cut it down to a little stump, and that it would re-grow. She also suggested a little hormone. Anyway, that was about 3 weeks ago. I've recently noticed a tiny,tiny green(spot)(leaf?) barely sprouting on the base of the stump. I was wondering if this is worth keeping and saving and will it grow into a new jungle drum?

What exactly is a Jungle Drum? Which family is it in? Is it a tropicl or succulent? Thanks, Toni

The family is cyclanthaceae, and it is a tropical. I've had one for a couple of years now, and remember it was a hard one to look up. I may be wrong but I seem to remember it was from the same family as the coconut?? I'll have to research it again. It's a beautiful palmlike plant which is quite happy at my house in a spot where it receives 2 to 3 hrs of direct afternoon sun, but does like extra humidity which it gets from a pepple tray. I'd say it is an easy care plant.

I would guess that yes, if something is growing now that wasn't growing before, you're on the way to having a new plant. It's at least a definite signal that it's not dead, and not-dead is usually a plus.

Whether it's worth it to wait is something we can't really answer for you. It's likely to take quite a while to get to displayable size, so if you're about the instant gratification of having a good-size, pretty plant right away*, find it a nice home and go buy yourself a new one.

*(nothing wrong with that. Some people like plants 'cause they're pretty, some like plants 'cause they like having stuff to take care of. It's hardly a moral issue, though it's important not to fool yourself about which one you are.)

I bought one from Lowes a few months ago and it has put out a few new leaves. It is a member of the order Pandanales and I think one of the few Pandanales relatively easy to find, so I say enjoy this rather unique plant. When I had mine outside it was in part shade and I kept it pretty moist. I guess I will see how it does inside for the winter. :)

It looks like a palm but is not one, I've seen them before but never got one because they get huge, but one was on sale at lowes, $0.50, those employees kill so many plants by over watering or from no water at all, so if I see a plant there I get the girl in lawn and garden ( a good friend) to mark it down and I buy it and bring it back to life. I'd think Lowe's would train new people on how to care for indoor plants, Lowe's loses so much money because of plant abuse "lol". I just love all kinds of plants, but by winters coming, I bring them in not realizing how many I have and usually run out of space from keeping them inside, so I have to live around my plants.
