Whats eating my grape cane?
Comments (1)I have this problem as well. I think it is a fungal infection called phomopsis cane, though I'm not 100% sure....See MoreWhat's eating Quercus coccinea (gilbert grape)?
Comments (6)Yikes! I'm not an entomologist, and could be way off base - but this is the first year in recent memory that I've not had forest tent caterpillars totally defoliate most of the young bur and bur-hybrid oaks in yard and along my driveway - they'll do it virtually overnight, and seem to feed at night, and disappear into the grass during the daylight hours - only once or twice have I managed to catch one of 'em "in the act". But, at my place, they usually hit shortly after initial leaf-out; the trees releaf and have the rest of the season to recoup....See MoreGrapes and blueberries being eaten
Comments (1)The blueberries are being used by "leaf cutter bees" ... it's just cosmetic damage. They cut circles out of tender leaves and petals to line their nests. The bees are great pollenizers! Comments (3)I've found two different beetles really chew huge holes in bigger leaves and eat the youngest ones entirely, and Japanese beetles seem to love mine, though they only recently arrived in my garden and most likely will prove a major problem. Theres' also a much larger beetle with beige overall shells with black spots, which I've never identified, and that one loves them as well. As for not seeing anything, I'd assumer you have looked very carefully, and in some cases those beetles are very good at conceiling themselves and you have to look hard to find them. Nocturnal munchers that live elsewhere during the daylight hours are also good candidates, though most caterpillars will stay with the food source as will the beetles. I'd guess snails love them as well, and those would depart during daytime hours....See Morepittsfordnygardener
