Here in chicago - about the same....

tomatoes didn't start ripening till september to get a daily dose. Pepper aren't ripe yet. 1 zuke! handful of cukes.

chard did very well for the most part. good carrot crop, but they weren't the tasties, but ok.

dill bolted pretty quick, radishes did ok - then bolted quickly into the heat.

Hoping for a good fall crop!

Well, as always, there are winners and losers because of the variations in our climate. Last year was cold, and heat lovers sulked, this year was hot, and cold weather crops came and went fast, but warm season crops were generally happy to very happy. I had great corn, squash, beans, fabulous melons, lots of peppers, all of the eggplant I wanted, lots of fun Asian warm weather things like luffas and bottle gourds and wax gourds. Some things were a challenge not due to weather but to terrible animal issues, deer, woodchucks, rabbits, voles, in particular I had real problems with deer eating my tomato plants, but I'll get an adequate yield, albeit late because they had to recover from being almost stripped to stubs in late June. I did buy some dried blood, which actually worked to keep the deer away.

Overall, pretty good year. I'm in central Oakland County, and it's extremely dry here. We had less than a quarter inch of rain at my house all of August, and the 1/3 of an inch yesterday isn't nearly enough to make a real difference, although it might green the lawn just a bit for a few days.

All brassicas (arugula, collard, cabbages, lacinato, kale, rutabaga, turnip, Brussels sprouts, broccoli raab): good to great.

Cardoon: great.

Celery: a bit stringy, but great flavor.

beans: good.

Lettuce: great.

Fennel: good but plants are now getting diseases and collapsing.

Radicchio: OK

peas: poor

Peppers, eggplant and potatoes: good

Tomatoes: OK

garlic: great

onions and corn: mediocre

Cucumber and melons: poor and dead

squash: poor and dead (SVB)

sunflowers and herbs: great

chard and beets: great and OK

bok choi: poor.

Tomatoes were great here! In fact, everything that the deer did not eat was great. I'd like to find a better broccoli but that's not any fault of the weather for me. Now last year, THAT was an awful garden year for me!

Glib, I'm surprised to hear your melons and cucumbers didn't do well. They loved the weather this year, what happened to yours.

I planted about 130 row feet of melons, spaced in hills about 3 feet apart. I must have had over 200 melons. Far more than I could use. I'm glad I've got a large flock of poultry now (24) to eat the excess.

Great year for melons, yes. But mine caught a disease and perished. The cukes were done in by the beetles a bit earlier than usual this year, due to the warm spring no doubt. I am following your lead and have them on plastic next year, from day 1, to see if they can avoid touching the ground and catching that disease. It was the same disease last year, in a bed very far from this year, but of course last year it did not matter. Not a bad year otherwise, and the bok choi doing poorly was the only other surprise. Given the season, the peas never stood a chance.

I will be adding more automatic watering next year.
I also have had less than 1/2 inch of rain since July.
September is supposed to be our wettest month and so far less that 1/4 " of rain almost halfway through.

Stuff that likes warmth and does not need consistant watering did great ( ie Chard, Herbs many flowers ) but things that like regular watering ( Nightshades, Okra, Greens, and Azalea family plants for that matter ) all pouted this season.

This year our garden, for the most part, did very well.

Corn was a bust. But that was because it didnt get the fert that it needed.

Melons were fantstic!!!!!! First time I have ever gotten fruit. Have eaten 2 muskmelons so far and 2 watermelons. Have a bunch more to harvest, better do it soon!

Carrots did great.

Peas did great.

Sweetpotatos are looking like I may get some. Thanks to you all I decided to plant some.

Yukon Gold did pretty good, even with all the tater bugs.

Kennibeck taters are doing ok even with the bugs.

Tomatoes grew, but are just now getting ripe.

Hot peppers are in the green house and are doing great.

Cukes were a bust for me. But MIL's did great til she got powdery mildew.

Lakota squash are doing great also. Got some noce and big ones.

Onions did ok. Didnt get any to the size I wanted.

Late cabbage are doing great also, used row cover to keep moths off the and think that helped in two ways.

Beets did excellent. Pickle beets, cant wait!!!!

Pie pumpkins did ok, but my Prizewinners only put out 3.

Herbs did great.

Got 3 brussel sprout plants, who were mix in with the cabbage we bought, and look like we may get some. Have tried to grow these on purpose and have never had much luck. But with them under the row cover with the cabbage, it looks like we may have success.

Our wild (?) horseradish is doing excellent as always.
A friend of ours dug them up when he found them in the woods someplace, and gave them to us.

So all in all, we had a pretty successful year. Except for the corn which was a bust. But because of the advice I recieved here it should be a better year for them next year.
