How did your tomatoes do this year?

My husband plants our tomatoes in square foot gardens, and we always have a nice harvest. However, this year is the best year we have had in recent years. We have 8 tomato bushes, and we have harvested over a bushel, given them away to all the neighbors, and they are still going strong. Is this a bumper crop year for tomatoes for any of you? This year we put Epson Salts on them a couple of times during the mid-growing season. I don't know if that made a difference or not.

EXCELLENT!
We lost a tree that was shading our vegetable beds and were able to expand our planting areas. I learned more (and am learning more and more) about biodynamic gardening, and have added some rock dusts and lots of home compost to my soil and fed it fish emulsion and it's growing strong! We've probably had close to a bushel of larger size tomatoes, and a LOT of cherry. I'm actually about ready to take one or two plants out and add more cherry tomatoes for fall,

Mine are not well at all, but my entire garden has been neglected this year. The first round is just ripening and they're fairly small. I'm so disappointed ... I usually harvest enough tomatoes to make spaghetti sauce to last me through the following spring. This year looks like it won't make it through the new year. :-(

Galcho, I WS about 1/2 of my tomatoes, and sowed the rest indoors to see which would do better. It's not exactly a scientific experiment, since they were different varieties, but here are my results so far. Azoychka WS None ripe yet Black Cherry SI(Sown Indoors) 1st ripe 8/21 Cherokee Purple SI 1st ripe 8/19 Mini Bush Yellow Cherry WS None ripe yet - only one growing in a container though Moskvich WS None ripe yet Opalka SI None ripe yet San Marzano SI 1st ripe 8/20 Sungold WS 1st ripe 8/16 Supersweet 100's WS None ripe yet So it looks like out of the ones sown indoors 3 out of 4 are already ripe, and only 1 out of 5 of the wintersown are ready, though they all have tons of tomatoes on them now. I may do half and half again next year with different varieties and see if the indoor ones still produce ahead of the wintersown ones. To be coninued ... Bonnie

Oh I would love some of those stick tomatoes!! I have yard long asparagus bean seeds, about a dozen -ish to trade. I have two watermelon seeds with oranged meat inside ["Orange Tendersweet"]. I spilled the package and I didnt see them. When I finially noticed them, all but two were wet, so I stuck them in a plastic shoe box with my potting mix ..I had 100% germination. I have been giving them to any one that wants seedlings. There were two left in my envelope. I grow in buckets My version of a self watering set up and EVERYthing looks good. I am email you my mailing address just in case you have a few for me. Thanks, Ssmittee from Auburdale. I tried to send the seeds with the email right where it said 'attatchment' but it left the on the counter. So I will send them snail mail. lol just kidding. How are your tomatoes doing? Late blight?

I'm not giving up so easily on late blight. there is a lot of information on late blight on the internet. one post I read stated success in delaying death while getting tomatoes with frequent applications of fish fertilizer. Bayer serenade is omri certified for organic production and is primarily a biological and available at almost any garden center. a product from us ag llc out of Lutherville ga classified as an adjuvant called c4 has an effect on fungus and insect pests. its not 'organic but designed to reinforce friendly soil biology and help raise brix levels. there videos about baking soda as a garden fungicide. it works by ph regulation. last year i read a study on this and baking soda did not effect sodium levels in the soil. it's apparently stable and doesn't give up its sodium. even if it did you could neutralize that. I'm also hitting it hard with microbe teas made from fish both emulsion and hydrolyzed as well as tomato tone as it has a beneficial microbe package built in [and boy do the weeds love this stuff]. also check out the t and j enterprises website it's interesting. I'll try their product either later or next year it is intriguing. maintain a high brix readings in your plants that's the best way to avoid pests use nematodes for grubs. in this day and age there is no reason in my mind to wave the flag of surrender in short 'I've have not yet begun to fight'. even if I lose this battle the war is not yet over.

My season was good in Chillicothe - when spring looked like it was going to continue to July I potted 100+ tomato plabnts in 20+ gal containers - made my own mix - used a product to inocculate the soil with a variety of micro - endo & ecto micro organisms - fertilized - all organic and had really good success - planted other seedlings when the ground dried up - had to really work the heavy "clay" soil and then planted my tomatoes, peppers & other veggies - I was going to sell plants also but was too busy with the business "About Cooking" so I gave away plants and tested others with new propduct I have been studying for 3 years. (now available retail in Omri & non Omri versions) I grow mostly heirlooms - don't like the big seed companies etc - I have seeds for over 350 varieties so I was trying how several worked back here - wife is from here and we moved back in Aug/July 2010 - will try more varieties this year - gave away a bunch - black krim (12 other blacks & bunch of purples), cherokee purple, green & chocolate - greendoctors - aunt rubys , Evegreen (Ohio tomato & other gree varities) - Snow white & super SW - kelloggs - kbx -sungold select OP - several wild boar farms varieties - black green & bi's - several french, russian and old usa tomatoes plus new ones - NO HYBRIDS

This has been the best year for tomatoes,I have had since I can remember. I started mine from seed, first time ever, and planted many varieties The Cherokee Purples are the best tomatoes I have ever eaten. They have a wonderful taste of semi sweet and tangy too. I will defentley plant those again.

Hi. I'm new here so I might not be doing this right. I just had to reply to this post because I've had SO many tomatoes this year. I just read an email from my hubby saying that he wouldn't mind if he never saw another tomato again. I had five plants and TONS of maters. I've frozen, canned, cooked and sandwiched. We made hot sauce, pasta sauce, chili base and just plain old canned tomatoes. I thought I'd have another month left but those ugly leaf beetle critters have taken over. They give me the creeps. I'm thinking about doing a fall garden but it would be a first for me. I don't know where to start. Insects would be the biggest problem. My husband planted collards one year and all I remember is worms all over them. I'd have to do a lot of reading to learn how to do a good green leafy vegetable garden. I hate not having anything growing. I LOVE gardening. It's rather depressing watching the stuff die.

This has been a great year for maters!!! Especially the Cherokee Purples!!! I live in Dunwoody and I think I only watered maybe 3 or 4 times this year!

Mine are coming in faster than I can put them up.I wsd mine from seed.I always put epson salt in the hole when I plant them and then put circles of red vinyl around the plant.I have tried alot of different varieties for the last couple of years and have had great success with them.

I planted about 50+ plants and they got away from me before I could support them up..so I have 50 sprawling mater plants, it's a jungle out there to say the least, fortunately I am able to navigate around the plants and pick them.

I have put up (frozen) many quart bags and have given tons away and have thrown away another ton, I picked a 5 gallon bucket last week (a weekly event) and for every one I picked I had to toss 3 or more. they had rotten spots on them (from bug bites etc).

Next year, I'm only planting Amelia, it's been the best looking, most dependable growing wise, size wise, flavor wise, DISEASE FREE plant out there. AND I'll get my supports in before the plants go in.
AND I probably wont plant 50+ plants :)

I planted 2 Early Girls in a Tomato Success planter from Gardner's Supply. They did really well until a few weeks ago when the tomatoes got smaller..and fewer..and the vines are yellowing and wilting. They are kept watered through the bottom supply so what's going on? Is it time for them to die? They don't seem to have a disease.
