Rhubarb AND Asparagus Questions

My MIL gave us two rhubarb crowns from her garden last week; I have a nice sunny space on the side of the house where I want to plant them (once I dig up the potatoes). I also want to put in some asparagus. I'd love to have a lot of both but due to space limitations, I can't. Anyway, here are my questions: Can I grow rhubarb and asparagus in the same bed? Any particular preparations needed for that bed? Full sun or partial? I don't know what variety rhubarb I have, but I thought about acquiring some Jersey Giants asparagus... from what I've been reading here, that's a goodie and my whole family loves asparagus. But, I know not to pick asparagus for the first year (or is it two?), is rhubarb the same? Thanks!

Also, one more question; are rhubarb and asparagus plants attractive or somewhat --uh-- ugly? Me, I don't care but we have an HOA that sometimes gets picky about such things and if I'm just growing fluffy ferns (asparagus) they might not gripe as much. Thank you.
