The Atropa Belladonnas arrived today. They got a little beat up in shipping but I think they'll pull through. I'll keep y'all posted if anyone gets atropine poisoning.
lol....well, at least you're 'educated' on the pros and cons, right?! I still think you'll have major spider mite infestation before atropine poisoning.
Definitely keep us posted, though...I'm definitely interested in how they work out for you....it'll be an interesting venture!
Well, it's been almost a week and all 4 have bounced back and are growing like weeds. I'll post pics when they get a little bigger.
As far as atropine poisoning goes...Yesterday, I pinched off a damaged leaf and got some of the juice under my nail. I then proceeded, not thinking, (obviously) to scratch my elbow. After the initial scratch it got really itchy and I kept scratching. Then I remembered the belladonna. I stopped scratching, and after a few minutes, the itching went away, but this morning there was a puss filled blister...Bring it on "I told you so" Irenes, I suppose I deserve it for my carelessness.
Finally, I BS'ed an essay question in my stupid english class with the Belladonna. The teacher loved it. Hooray! Bob
Wow! That's one mean plant! Be careful! Better wash your hands before snacking!!
I get hives working with yucca elephantipes and some of the spiny leaved bromeliads. I have coworkers who developed an allergy to the white milky sap in poinsettias. Weird how different plants affect different people.
Last year I had a reaction to datura, cutting seed pods off a lot of them, I got a tingle in my hands and light sensitivity in the eyes, huge pupils! but not a high luckily I've read it's a pretty nasty trip! Anyway, Bob, congrats on the essay and play carefully with your plants. and post photos when you can. I'm real interested, maybe I'll plant it near the datura and castor bean plants! My deadly garden...LOL
Oh geesh, this is freaking me out..!!! Several yrs ago I bought a little plant for .10..an elderly retired man who sowed seeds during winter months, then sold via our neighborhood newspaper..his seedlings were dirt cheap..I ended up bring home datura, and planted out front..They grew a few yrs later, then about a yr ago, none sprouted..In the past few days I've been working outside, and wouldn't you know it, there's tons of daturas growing by the edge near walkway. Now I don't know what to do..should I pluck them all? I don't know how many I touched yesterday, but I KNOW I handled a few. BTW, dats have a stinky odor..Now I've a big decision. BTW, I've also a brug, kept in gh during winter, and outside in summer..Feel like tossing everything out after reading that article..LOL..Toni
Toni, Don't panic! I had sap from mature seed pods that I should have been more careful with on my hands, contact with my eyes from my fingers is what caused the light sensitivity. You could probably pull the seedlings out and not have anything happen! I've grown Dats in the house over the winter and get a few flowers off and on. You really have to ingest to feel the full effect, it was a freak accident that caused my sensitivity, if they were dangerous to handle I'd have gotten rid of them long, long, ago. Don't toss! Just don't eat them!!!!
Chaz, what freaked me out is, I got an email from a woman I talk to..she happened to mention Brugs/Datura in her email, just before I read this post..she told me a story about a woman who was watering her 6' trees, and got squirt in the eye..soon after, this woman had sudden anxiety attacks and hallucinations that lasted for hours..Then after reading this post, all I can say is Wow..lol..It's just ironic..Nope, not going to toss them, but will be careful, and I suggest anyone else out here who grows them does the same..Toni
I used to have white daturas outdoors for several years until they eventually died off. I used to handle them bare-handed all the time and no problems at all. Just don't use them as eyedrops! :)
watergal, LOL, they actually were used at one time to enlarge the pupils for beauty! Scarey huh? When I lived in NJ, mine acted like a perennial for about 3-4 years then died off, not even seedlings for a couple of years then one spring dormant seeds started to sprout and they were back. I've only had the reaction the one time and I believe it was because of the quantity of sap I was exposed to and the contact of the sap with my eyes via my hands. Not a smart move on my part. However, I love these flowers and try to grow them in the garden every year. I even plant them in pots and take at least one in for the winter, like I said once in awhile I get blooms during the long, dark, cold winter. Bob, sorry for highjacking your thread. Be sure to post photos when you can. Chaz
I tried saving some seeds but nothing sprouted. Now I have a dog who likes to munch foliage, so I avoid daturas, brugs, and castor beans altogether to be on the safe side.
All 4 Belladonna's have deemed themselves worthy of repotting and shuttling around my balcony, and one of them popped out a bloom! Hooray! No new plant poisoning disasters to report. Maybe the sneaky raccoon or squirrel who nibbles on my orchids and my jade, will eat the fruit...and nibble no more. Bob http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u181/Bob123How/Belladonnabud.jpg

very cool Bob! Nice and healthy looking, I may have to get one or more...LOL Something, possibly a chipmunk has been nibbling on my castor bean seedlings, hope this puts an end to what ever has been rearranging my mulch!
