Hi, Kentstar. You've been a good sport listening to all this advice, so here're other suggestions. My best guess is that you shocked your plant and that your plant's young roots are reacting to the soil amendments. For now, less is more. Don't drown the rose. Do NOT fertilize it. Do NOT prune the rose. It can protest to the point of dropping all the leaves and still survive. One way of saying that is the proverbial, "Step away from the rose." You can't take that comment any way but as a joke with a kernel of truth behind it. Water-don't water until after you rake back the mulch and use a garden trowel to dig down in the soil about 10 inches next to (but not touching the rootball) your rose. This is where you will test for soil moisture - not wet and not dry. The surface moisture isn't very instructive. In other words, put your pinkies in the soil. Manure, Bonemeal and greensand - in general, the roots of young plants should never come into contact with your fertlizer amendments. In other words, don't fertilize young plants until they are growing well. Natural doesn't mean harmless. Even composted manures can be too strong for some young plants. The more amendments I add to soil before plant, the more time I give them to mellow and cure a bit in the soil before planting. Bone meal should be in the bottom of the hole, below the roots, not mixed into the soil. I suggest in the future that you amend your soil in advance (except for the bone meal or other source of phosphorus), water if necessary, and let is sit a few days to a couple of weeks if you buffer pH by adding lime. When you plant, put a layer of soil between your plant and the bone meal of super phosphate or whatever you use. Weather - I seriously doubt 35 or 40 degrees had any effect on your rose. I garden in Zone 8-9, and grow cuttings outside all winter with no protection at all. Temps drop down below 20, and the plants are fine. Planting Depth - In the future, consider planting own root plants deeper. The soil protects the canes from drying out while the plant adjusts to garden conditions. I'd plant up to the first set of branching canes. Good luck.

Thanks, Luis. It's a new plant from the store, only 2 blooms and less than a foot tall -- the pot is the plastic one in which it came from the store. It's only potted because the weather is being uncooperative and I don't dare plant it in the ground yet for another week or two. So, I will not water it again as long as the soil feels damp, even if it wilts on me again (it has perked up since being re-watered this morning and moved away from the cold windows into the sunny room. I say "sunny" but really I should say "light-filled." That room has a mid-sized picture window -- still covered in plastic, with the shade down and the thin, white floral cotton curtains pulled shut. In the mornings it gets plenty of light, but no direct sun through all those layers. It's only about 58 in my house the past few days, so I don't think I am going to boil or fry the plant in there. I have it sitting on top of my pellet stove -- which is OFF for the season, so no heat, just a nice distance from the windows -- not too close, not too far. I'll also check the bottom for drain-ability. It seems to prefer it in there -- it's perked right up. So, I'll leave it there until it's safe to plant it in the garden outside, only water when no longer damp, not let direct sun get on it, and make sure it is well-drained. Cross fingers for me!

It wilted due to stress. Maybe a lack of water. I'm guessing there were few root hairs on the roots. Transferring from a system where roots are constantly wet to one where they are only slightly damp can be a shock. Try watering heavily. They might pull out of it. Sometimes a plant can look like it's dead when it's in shock, but pulls out just fine. But, sometimes they really are dead. I grow all plants hydroponically at the beginning. All my soil garden plants are started in an ebb and flow system. However, these plants are in coco coir and develop some really nice root hairs. My plants rarely experience transplant shock and when they do, it's because I did something clutzy like dropped them when pulling them out. I've transplanted from DWC (where the roots just dangle in water) to soil, too. The plants suffered for a day, but pulled out of it. I thought they would die. Something to consider is that if you plant in direct sunlight, that could hurt them, too. It's best to transplant to soil on overcast days or shade the plants with something. I'm guessing the basil is of pretty good size, too. It's best to harvest some of the leaves to reduce transpiration if the plant is used to constantly being immersed in water. I wouldn't do it now as the plants seem to be overly stressed, but in the future you might keep that in mind.

I think Lowe's has a 1 year guarantee. Maybe that would work on these roses. I was in our local Lowe's the other day, was looking at the roses. Just pathetic! Most were wilted, dried up, crying out for water. A guy who looked like a manager pranced up to me, all smiley faced and asked if I was finding everything all right - I said yes, but would you please get someone to water your poor roses? I am a rose person and it really bothers me to see those poor plants dying from lack of water. His happy face burst like a balloon and he gave me a blank stare. He pointed at a lady employee and said oh, that is her department. She apologized and said she has been really busy. I thought - doing what? Watching the roses die? Most of the ones on display were in death throes from lack of water. I strolled through the garden area later and she was watering - not the roses but ferns, etc. that looked just fine. Then they put the half dead plants on 50% or more off.....when they could have just cared for them and sold them at full price. Go figure! I haven't noticed roots like what you all described but will check. They are bad about mislabeling plants. I bought on another trip there a rose that had probably just arrived, looked great, beautiful buds. It is labeled Carefree Beauty but it most certainly is not. It looks like a pale pink double Knockout. Have seen the candy pink, pink blush, more like a single, but not one like this. And....the other day it produced a bloom that is half red/half blush pink. I have heard of KO's that occasionally do this. So who knows what it is? Its pretty - healthy and is going in my pink bed - and I WILL check the roots! Judith
