omg there's a snake in my house.....again

I hear my grandson excitedly talking to his Mom early this morning, and she's saying "no, there's not,stop it".......and suddenly my 2 dogs run down the hall to her bedroom. So Hoss and I look at each other like ???? so I run after the dogs. And as I get to my daughter's room I can hear her saying OMG OMG.....*sigh* she says "there's a SNAKE right THERE" pointing to a spot a couple feet from her head on the floor. I didn't see it, but she described what sounds like a rat snake.......*dirty word* x 10....I have a friend of my sons coming later to look for it. It's been warm, then really cold and then warm the same day. And now it's hot and muggy and I don't know how many more times I can handle this! LOL...oh, I gotta mention we live by a river, and there's other people's fields near us that the hay gets mowed in. Always mice and rats, then snakes after that. The joys of living in the middle of nowhere :D

LOL my grandson told her "Mama, I can't get out of bed, there's a snake on the floor" and he kept telling her, but she didn't believe him :D

I might run away from home, ya'll!!

At least it wasn't a venomous snake. Not much consolation though..........

Wellll........all "the guys" have stood around and discussed it, and come to the conclusion that "it went back out the way it came".....
where have I heard this story before???

Oh, man, I don't even know how many snakes we've had! When the hay gets mowed and baled, rats,mice,snakes....ick, you name it. The river is so close. The weather is warm pretty much year round. And some of the incidents are so crazy, you just can't make this stuff up :D If you didn't read my blog..well, my son was about 12 or 13, and killed a snake, and then decided he wanted to make a belt.(a friend is a taxidermist,so he figures he'll get tips how to do it) So he nails this huge fat snake to a long board, took lots of nails and quite a while to get it done, since he's carefully stretching this snake a little at a time. When my sister comes over later,he's all excited, come see the snake I got, I'm gonna make a BELT...the board was there, but the snake and all the nails were gone. It turns out this hell-a long snake was still alive, and played possum the whole time he's nailing it with dozens of nails. My son just figured, oh,well, I'll get another snake one day. Me, I picture this PinHead HellRaiser snake crawling away, continuing it's snake-ly business. But about snakes in the house...one time, I guess my son was about 21 at the time, I don't remember, but already an electrician. He and my future daughter in law were in his room chatting about what to do for the day when he tells her 'go see my mom'. She got up and asks 'what?' and he says 'there's a snake, go see my mom, and tell her to come here'(cause ya'll know how useful I am in these situations!) Well, turns out he noticed the helium filled mylar balloons she'd gotten him were bobbing about. And it was a snake...ON THE WALL...that kept butting heads with the balloons,making them bounce around like that. He's shut the door by then, but I run down the hall to see what he wants ME for. He says' bring me my sidecutters..whatWHATwhat?...yeah, I squawk like a chicken ..he repeats himself and I go fetch them. And he wants me to put a towel under the door' so it can't get out, Mom...well, all of us, future daughter-in-law,daughter,myself..naturally we stay outside the door where we can hear all this bumping and banging, then swearing "*&^% the *&^%$#@ thing went into the back of my television. MOm, bring me my tool bag.'..ack,omg..so he has to take apart his TV to retrieve this huge snake. We can hear him swearing and then finally he says 'ya'll back up and go to the living room. Mom, open the door." omg..he comes out,with this snake he's grabbed by the neck with a pair of sidecutters(something with a SHORT handle),and it's wrapped around his forearm, with it's head half cut off, but he's holding onto it pretty good with these sidecutters, and he takes it outside, and has to fight to get it uncoiled off his arm, but he gets it off and throws it in the bushes. Then he wants to know "what did you plan? a movie or what?" So calm. So brave. Once my son was here working on his truck when a couple of his friends, brothers, stopped by. They'd just gone canoeing down the river and saw him in the drive, so they stopped to chat. Well, as they stood in the shade talking, up crawls this long green snake. The brother wearing the shirt, reached down and grabbed the snake and held it up to the brother without a shirt. They're all laughing, and the shirted brother is holding this snake out in front of him....when all of a sudden...the snake jumped forward, and latches onto the brother without a shirt, right on his NIPPLE!!! I was out there,too. I couldn't do anything but make little strangling sounds and these guys are all laughing, even the one wearing the snake on his nipple. Finally I start backing up and the guy without a shirt got the snake to let go and he's holding it. All I could think of to say was "you need a tetanus shot"..... We've had LOTS of snakes inside. I have LOTS of snake stories. Heck, I have rat stories,too! It's scary. But anytime you live in the country ,and on the river, this happens. They sell these big huge glue traps for rats and snakes. Just like the little ones you catch mice with. So far,though, the rats are too smart, and maybe too big, for the glue traps. We had this rat we tried and tried to catch, one that would jump from behind the washing machine when I'd go in there at night. Well, my son decided he was going to get it one night, and set out a mechanical trap, and a glue trap, and then set a chair so he could look through the kitchen door at it. He got an air rifle, and fixed himself a drink, and got comfy in that chair. Sure enough, this rat comes from behind the washer, but jumped right on the glue trap. This rat gave us the most horrible hairy eye-ball as it went back down beside the washer with this glue trap stuck to it's butt. But a few seconds later it jumps straight up,looking us in the eye, and reaches down with it's little rat fingers in mid stride, and YANKS that glue trap off of itself.....and gets away. I'm sure it went on to father many many smart little rat-lings, but we never caught it. And it never came back. But that was a GOOD THING, right Martha? ******oh, this is long. I'm going to have to write a book one day :D

Well after thinking about it the hamster story is kind of long but it to make it short Henry and Harry ended up being a boy and girl and had babies. The mother escaped and made a nest in the couch and I found them. They got out again and I only found her and a couple of the babies and never found the rest. I assumed they wouldn't survive without the mother and was worried about funky dead babies someplace. Several months later I came home after going out drinking one night with my next door neighbor and thought I was hallucinating when I saw about 10 different color little rats running around the parking lot at my apartments. They all lived, lol. I caught all but one and after I moved out the guy next door thought he had a mouse eating his stuff in the pantry and put out a trap and caught the last one. He called and told me about it and how it ate holes in the walls and all his cabinets. Destructive and prolific little buggers if they get loose. It was pretty funny to him that night watching me try to catch little wild hamsters half lit at 3am with a flashlight running all over the place. He didn't think it was funny that we missed one, lol.

Not many people enjoy snakes more than I do, but I have to say, even I would not be happy to have one fall on me out of nowhere before I knew what it was. My story along those lines involves a cat house we built on the back of our home years ago, with a kitty door going out to it. A little verandah for our indoor cats, so they could lay on the cat shelves out there and enjoy the fresh air. Unfortunately, it wasn't screened in, but rather, enclosed with a wide mesh wire fencing. This meant that lizards and snakes and many other creepy crawlies could take short cuts right through it. (Though why anything would WANT to cut through a small enclosed area with three large cats hanging out in it is beyond me.) Suffice it to say, many snakes were cat nabbed and carried proudly back through the cat doors over the years. My husband at the time had a phobia about them, and would end up standing on the chairs or the sofa hollering at me to come get the snake (which was almost NEVER injured in any visible way) and take it outside. It was a funny sight. But he got the last laugh. I got up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night once and stepped right on top of a black racer in my bedroom...in my bare feet...in the dark! There was MUCH screaming and hollering and hopping about coming from ME that time! This one was injured, but definitely still thrashing about. *shiver* THAT will wake you up right quick! Marcia

That's just too cool, kiddo! I think that's a good idea about planting corn here and there as accent pieces. I might do that too, next year, maybe with some beans! I picked a yard long bean yesterday and it really WAS a yard long! So far it's the longest one I've picked, most have been only a little over a foot long, but still lots of bean for the space. It was hilarious, I was so excited about the bean that I took it to show my husband. He's just had knee surgery and the home health nurse was with him, changing his bandage. When I came in dangling the bean, the nurse jumped. She thought it was a snake! LOL we all had a good laugh, she was really glad to know it was only a bean. The people who walk the park along my back fence just love to stop and chat and ask questions about the garden. I have met so many people that way. Even the guys who run the mowers for the City will stop and take their breaks at our fence. I just love volunteers! It's like a little present from Mother Nature. LOL I always let them grow if I can. Last year, I had several cantaloupe from volunteer plants. I had never grown them before, the seeds were from a supermarket cantaloupe that I had put in the compost bin. This year, I had a couple of plants come up in the compost bin, they look like a cucumber or squash plant. I haven't bought a cantaloupe in awhile so not sure what they are. I transplanted them someplace where they will grow better and we'll see, eventually, what they are. I can't remember putting cukes or squash out there either, so it might even be something the birds planted. In that case, it could be most anything. If there was no such thing as stock panels, I wouldn't know what to do! DH made a grape arbor and a trellis out of pipe, and we put pieces of stock panels up the sides and on the tops of them to support the things that grow there. Besides my two stock panel arches, I also have put a hog panel along the side of one raised bed because the asparagus keeps flopping out into the walkway if I don't. Normally I would use tomato cages, but I used all I had on other things and can't seem to buy any more, everyone's sold out and not ordering any more for the season. Beans are hard to see, to get every one of them. Pretty often, there will be ones I miss and they will have gotten too big to eat. I just let them go ahead and "ripen" on the vine and I use those beans for seed. If you "stew" your plums, you can use lots of the under-ripe ones, especially if you're going to make jam out of them. If you're sure the plum has no worms in it, you can put it into the pot, pit and all, and take the pit out after it has stewed (use only enough water with the plums to keep from sticking, and stew on low heat). The presence of the under-ripe ones makes it jell better. Use 6 C. stewed plums, 5 C sugar, a pat of butter, cook to the jell point and you will have nice jam. --Ilene

That snake business would drive me crazy! But I bet it's beautiful living close to a river & countryside. I'd be afraid to put my feet on the floor though :-)

Oh creepy! I really feel for you! I'd be hopping from one piece of furniture to another...and at my age that would be no easy feat!

Your telling about this reminded me of when I was a kid. My brother and I helped his friend trap a rattle snake in his garage. His dad didn't believe us about the rattle at first. I guess he just had to hear if for himself!! LOL

Snakes, not my favorite.
Big testostorone filled He-men who can not find it and kill it for me - not my favorite either. LOL

We had to kill a snake a few weeks ago. I was looking for snails out in the sewer cleanout, watering system, water meter, PVC pipes sticking up out of the ground. The caps on some of these pipes have small vent holes. Snails get down in there to make woopy. I stick my arm way down there and pick out the snails. Well on this paticular day there was a 6" monster snake down in there. I just knew he was growling at me. I ran and got my garden gloves and gave them to Hubs to pull him out. He committed murder right there in the front yard. Then I hopped around feeling grossed out, nausiated, gagging, and guilty. We dumped the body in the garbage and waited for Animal Cruelty trucks to come pick us up and bag my garden gloves as evidence.
As for now I'm still "on the lamb" so dont tell anyone ya'll. Let this be our secret.

Kudzu, are you sure the snake is gone,maybe he just found a nice warm spot to curl up in!! Do you check for holes around your house? Mine is so tight nothing can get in. If mice chew through wood you can put sheet metal on 1st & that will keep critters out, our church has a crawl space where the pantry section is & they bit right through the plaster, we used sheet metal, nailed it in good & never have had problem since. I'm more scared of mice than snakes but if I got 1 it would probably rattle! Susie you are so funny- the S & S killer is on the loose!! (Snake & Snail) LOL!!!! Jan

Kudzuqueen, politely usher them out.
I have been there. We pretty much live out in the boonies here in FL and have had (several) snakes in (several) houses too. Just show them the way out.
They really don't want to be there with you, any more than you want to be there with them.
Everything's here for a reason.

I don't kill the good snakes but if a rattler or moccasin were bugging us I might.
My grandson brought me the prettiest lil ringneck,they are so tiny but I told him his mama was looking for it. The black snakes here grow HUGE but they eat rats,frogs and venomous snakes I do not allow them to be killed.That is probably why I have no venomous ones. the egrets and herons also eat snakes.

Kudzu, sorry about my previous post, I had had a couple glasses of wine and was feeling pretty brave, (just show the snake the door, lol).

I do know how you feel though, it's such a shock to come up upon one in the house and you can't shake the feeling thinking it might still be there. Especially with little ones around.

You know those 3 tier hanging mesh baskets you use for potatoes and onions- in a different house (yes, close to the water) I came into the kitchen one day to find one hanging off of it, another time one was under the kitchen counter. Another place (yes, close to the water) was bad for moccasins, big ones. The barn had a concrete floor and they liked to come stretch out along the corners. Had to be real careful moving things.

I've had a little ringneck in the bathroom at this house, so far that's all, though. You've got me snakey just thinking about it, now.

Anyway I hope you find your snake, or don't find your snake, lol, whichever is better. And don't forget to take a picture like Patti did! Now there's a brave soul.

You reminded me when I was a kid I saw Swiss Family Robinson...remember the snake scene? he was wrestling with it in the water, anyway I was in bed, had to go and stepped on my hula hoop. I just knew my bed was surrounded by snakes. Had to step on furniture while screaming for my mom.

Oh goodness, Patti ! It just happens way too often,doesn't it!Garden, when I had a small portico, I had two ferns hanging off it,door open and the screen door. A huge black racer was curled up in the fern, then decided to reach out and get on the screen. It crawled across the screen and across the side of the house. That was the first time I'd seen one go across a flat wall. The next time was across my son's bedroom wall, then it squeezed into the back of his TV.
What's weird is, when we were younger and roamed the woods looking for plants and petrified wood, we'd just step over cottonmouths and duck down if they were hanging in trees over our head. When we'd float the river, they'd jump up straight out of the water like a tall stick or something, and sometimes try to get in the boat..we'd bat at them with an oar, and tell them "git"....but now when I think back to those days, it gives me the shakes and I wonder what in the hell were we thinking? We were a long way from nowhere and no way to get to a hospital!
