LOL I would be kind of freaked out to sleep if I knew a small animal was loose in the house.

OMG Shawn you'd hate to be in my house. I have critters everywhere. Granted most are in cages but they do get out once in while. I'm not sure which is more difficult to catch, a chinchilla or a sugar glider? The chins are super fast and can jump about 6 feet horizontal or verticle but the sugar gliders can fly! Well it's really gliding but if they have enough altitude they can make it all the way across a big room. Just like a flying squirrel. My son's rat gets out occasionally and comes to my bedroom for a visit. I guess you wouldn't like that very much. lol

Don't get me wrong, I love animals. I would love to see the chinchillas and stuff, but if it is not a dog or a cat I would be a little creeped out if I knew it was loose in the house, lol. But if it is where I know it is, I'm OK with that. Still don't know about the rats....I don't think I would want to touch them even though they are pets. Just something about the tails.....

LOL!!! Glad at least one lizard is still alive! I bet the other one is too. Do you think your dog will try to catch it? Mine catch the ones outside. I hope they will provide some pest control for your plants! What will you do with them if you catch them?

At least that one has evaded the dog and cats for about two months. If I catch them they'll go back in their cage. It's my fault they escaped. I was feeding them and a couple crickets jumped out. I was trying to capture the crickets and forgot to put the cover back on the cage. When I turned back around after giving up on the crickets they were gone.

Disturbing to be sure, but not quite as bad as having an escaped hamster run aross your bare foot while shaving.

Kylie I was thinking the same thing. lol I have a funny/gross hamster story. When I was very young I had a pet hamster that bit me and immediately dropped dead. My Mom freaked thinking it had a disease so she called the vet. He asked her to bring it in and to store it in the freezer until she could get there. It was a weekend so the hamster had time to freeze solid. BTW it was a little brown hamster. I guess when she put it in things must have shifted and something squashed the hamster kind of flat. My oldest sister who was about 18 at the time came home late that night and must have had the munchies. Back then we used to put candy bars in the freezer. Well she must have thought the frozen hamster was a candy bar and tried to take a bite of it! Even though I was only about 3 I still remember the scream. lol

LOL Karyn! Your poor sister! Did she gargle with bleach??? With 8 kids, we always had something running around loose. You get used to waking up with rats in your bed (other than DH LOL) & gerbils running up the basement walls & we've had several snakes on the run (1 inside, 1 out). My best friend had her dead cat in the freezer all winter until the ground thawed out enough to bury it. It was wrapped in foil & tripple bagged in plastic bags but it was still very un-nerving to go after something in her freezer, knowing what that bundle was. Word got out at work & she will never live it down (this was years ago). If I had a big enough freezer, I would have done the same thing with my first newfie when she died....The things we do for our beloved pets.

I tell my kids all the time, No rodents, No reptiles, No Birds and No amphibians!!!!! Good thing we are at our limit with pets!!!
We did have a hamster once, he kept escaping. The only way we could find him was to follow the cat, he was usually in the piano. That dang hamster did so much damage, he chewed beanie babies, made a nest in my daughters closet out of her carpet and baseboard. I said no more!!!

We got field mice in the house once my oldest was about 8 and she still remembers me going after them with my broom and her right beside me with her toy broom. She is probably scared for life.

Some topic! Karyn, glad you found at least one of your lizards so far. That story about your sister and the frozen hamster is too funny, but then, not if it had happened to me. I would have been scared for life!

My daughter is famous for letting reptiles go in the dang hose. We had a baby Iguna missing for about 4 weeks and then it showed up again , then it was a water dragon, then when the baby corn snake went A wall I drew the line. That dang snake never was found... Over 6 months ago. My daughter loves reptiles. She is 12. Brandy

oh my goodness too many reptiles and hamsters for me. I would never eat again at least at mom's house. LOL

Chena - no cuts, but certainly was a startling event. Glad it happened because we were on our 3rd day of looking for it. I'll bet there are 1000s of interesting hamster stories in this country!

My DH draws the line at snakes. He's petrified of them. I catch snakes at the farm all the time and bring them home for the kids to see...... in the backyard : ) I brought one in the house and DH freaked. I put it in his face and I swear he was going to faint! lol Jack too bad you didn't have Brandy's snake loose in the house when you lost the hamster. I bet it would have taken care of it.

18... late night... munchies... can't tell a hamster from a candy bar... wonder what she was doing before she got home?!

Life in Florida means a constant flow of lizards thru the house. They don't really bother me, but I've gotten pretty good at catching them and putting them outside, so the dogs don't get them. When I find one without a tail, I know they've met either Kramer or Peg! I've got about a dozen, hanging out outside the front door, on any given evening. Bugs attracted to light... lizards to bugs! They just follow us in sometimes.

after my rant about pets my DD came home today saying she wanted to buy a sugar glider and take to college with her!!! Never mind dorm rules. This is the child that won't drive and cant even keep up with her library fines. She was exempt from her exams this semester and I think I spent the last 2 days carting her back and forth to the school to take of things she forgot to do. And she thinks she can be responsible for a helpless animal???

Sugar Gliders make wonderful pets and are some of the cutest little animals. I have 2 but they are not for someone in a dorm that doesn't have a lot of time to spend with them. They need constant attention and a very specialized diet. You need to prepare a mixture called Modified Leadbeaters along with insects, fresh fruit, some veggies and they have huge appetites. Their cage also needs daily cleaning. If you don't you'll end up with fruit flies. Besides that they have a somewhat musky odor. It's not really noticeable in a big room but they could stink up a dorm room pretty darn quick! Tell her to get a rat. They make great pets. They're smart, affectionate and very clean compared to most rodents. They are also quiet and don't run on a wheel like a hamster. BTW sugar gliders are very noisy and active at night.

I couldn't resist. Here's a pic of my girls. They sleep in fleece pouches that are hanging in their cage. I also hang the pouch around my neck or keep the gliders in my pockets. You have to do that for several hours a day when you first get them or you won't be able to handle them. One last thing, they need a big cage, at least 4'H x3'L x3'W. Hopefully all this will convince your DD not to get one as a pet. lol

Well I am doing all I can do to stop her. She wont have any $$ form me. She is going to Europe for a graduation present and thinks she wont spend all of her spending money there and can home and buy them. Hopefully by then (she is going in June) she will be on to something else. You know how fickle teenagers can be.

Isn't your DD a lucky girl. I had to wait until I was 30 for my first trip to Europe. I'm sure she'll have found something else that she wants by the time she comes home and you're right. She'll be broke when she returns anyway. lol

Well after thinking about it the hamster story is kind of long but it to make it short Henry and Harry ended up being a boy and girl and had babies. The mother escaped and made a nest in the couch and I found them. They got out again and I only found her and a couple of the babies and never found the rest. I assumed they wouldn't survive without the mother and was worried about funky dead babies someplace. Several months later I came home after going out drinking one night with my next door neighbor and thought I was hallucinating when I saw about 10 different color little rats running around the parking lot at my apartments. They all lived, lol. I caught all but one and after I moved out the guy next door thought he had a mouse eating his stuff in the pantry and put out a trap and caught the last one. He called and told me about it and how it ate holes in the walls and all his cabinets. Destructive and prolific little buggers if they get loose. It was pretty funny to him that night watching me try to catch little wild hamsters half lit at 3am with a flashlight running all over the place. He didn't think it was funny that we missed one, lol.
