Corn Plant Growth

Hi there!

I recently acquired a beautiful corn plant (Dracaena fragans) with 4 stalks that is about 6 feet tall. I have tried searching all over but can't seem to find out how they grow. I believe the stalks themselves are at a permanent height, correct?

Does the leaf-portion of the plant grow in height, or does it just increase in fullness? How tall can I expect the plant to grow?

The leaf portion will increase in height. I have one that is close to 9' tall.....the only way to increase its fullness is to top it. I wouldn't though. I think the plant looks much better tall. If you're lucky, it will bloom for you too!

My corn plant has grown much too tall now (9' tall). Although I do like it tall, I need to trim it now since it's touching my ceilings.

The plant will continue to grow upwards and slowly lose the bottom leaves. You can see pics of my plants in a separate thread.

So further research led me to find that corn smut fungus also called huitlacoche in Mexico is eatin and sold as a delicacy. Some corn growers actually inncoluate their fields of corn with spores of the fungus because the huitlacoche is worth more than the corn itself. Maybe I'm on to something here!

I do. I saw "Janet Craig" growing outdoors here in Hayward, SF bay area,and it was a big plant growing under the eaves of an apartment. Hit the roof,and was growing forward to the light on a bushy plant.
