Best way to transition from heavy soil (dirt) to soilless mix

Here in India, you can only buy plants which are potted in dirt. The soil is often hard, baked and I wonder how the plants are still alive. Ever since I bought a bag of soilless mix (perlite + peat + vermiculite), whenever I buy a new plant, I completely rinse off the roots, loosen all the dirt held by them, try and untangle any rootbound ones and replant in the soilless mix. I water deeply for the first time and then switch to the dry and drench routine. Some plants take to this well but some of them lose leaves, my citrus lost some lemons, my spider looks dull and lifeless etc.

Is there something I can do to make this transition palatable for all my plants?

When I water the plants in the soilless mix, the top layer of mix, rises up with water (it being very light) and in some cases, I feel that the roots are dislodged. Is there a technique to water the plants such that there is minimal disruption to the roots? I do press the mix firmly when I am planting for the first time.
