Peaches in western Washington State

I have a frost peach tree, It did real well one year - an abundance of medium peaches, some peach leaf curl, than few peaches and more peach leaf curl, than I put on copper sulfate in Jan. and now no peaches. Lots of die back. Luckily the root stock has sprouted. I think I need to water the plant well and start looking for scionwood.

Any Ideas?

I have a Frost peach also. Very limited peach leaf curl.

But abundant bacterial canker which is killing the tree. That's likely the reason for your tree's dieback also.

I live in western WA too. I have 2 genetic darf peaches, Honey Babe and Sun Gold. They did very well last year and I thought that the leaf culr was limited by my spraying of neem oil. But, I sprayed neem this year and the leaf curl ws extensive, destroying all of the peaches and nearly killing the Honey Babe. So don't do what I did.

I also planted a 3rd new genetic dwarf, Bonanze, in January, and it dod not have any leav curl. I assume that is because it was protected for the first part of winter by being in storage as a bare root plant. It is only 2 feet tall and has 3 peaches on it.

I have read in a number of places that covering the trees to keep the rain off the branches, Dec through Feb, will prevent leaf curl so this year my intention is to do that. I just hope it doesn't bake the trees. I'll probably try to construct something to cover the trees wihtout letting in much sun, white to reflect heat. I also bought a peach/plum hybrid, which Im hoping wont get curl, but who knows?

I was up in eastern British Columbia this Spring and saw many square miles of bark beetle infestations. I was in Colorado from Steamboat Springs to Pagosa Springs this summer and saw the same thing there. I crossed the Continental divide 28 times in one trip from Montana to New Mexico. Yellowstone twice, going and coming. The destruction is devastating! I was also in Yosemite National Park where they do a lot of controlled burns as well as in the Calaveras Grove just north of there. We stayed in Oakhurst near Yosemite and Angels Camp near The Calaveras Grove of Sequoiandendron gigantea. Heat and bare ground are necessary for seed germination for these trees. That's why they burn, in addition to reduce fuel build up caused by fire suppression. The forest Service has numerous pamphlets outlining the benefits of controlled burning. They even admit it took a while to soak in. Their new goal is, diversification in both number of species, and varying ages in the same stand. Bark beetles have always been around. Good forest management might be able to minimize the effect on our forests. I can't see spraying as a viable option in the long run. We also visited the Redwood forests near Eureka, California and the forests around Mt Hood in Oregon for a week. We did some real traveling this year! Now I get to play catch up in the garden! Mike

Not to start a heated discussion, but. . . I am NOT proposing to can just "any tomato based recipe". I am proposing to follow the guidlines put forward to the public by a research based State Co-op Extension service. The directions for pressure canning are simple, and straightforward, and contain no language warning that the product will be unfit to eat after processing. There are extensive warnings about following salsa directions explicitly when water bath canning. We all understand and agree that those warning are of the utmost importance, including the need for proper acidification and not increasing the ratio of low acid veges to tomatoes. Perhaps I should have stated my intentions differently. I plan to pressure can at 11 lbs/ 35 minutes a salsa with a much lower pepper content (since I am allergic to peppers), different dried herbs (a safe substitution) and a different and lower source of acid (red wine). I will be following an approved recipe for amounts of tomatoes vs garlic, onions, and herbs; for amounts of tomato paste; and for length of cooking (to control for density issues). After canning this salsa, I may choose to heat it until boiling and serve it over pasta. It still seems like I am within the guidlines put out by WSU. Sharon

I didn't even know what an HRV was when I read your post! Interesting that I haven't seen the issue of fresh air mentioned before, in particular from the company we are purchasing our radiant kit from. Obviously there's more research needed for us. We've been managing without air conditioning for a long time in western Washington...I wish we felt like we needed it! Especially as cool as this summer has been. Glad to hear you are happy with it, thanks for posting.

Western Australia's state flower is the Red and Green Kangaroo Paw: Kangaroo paws come in a variety of colours including pinks, oranges, yellows and reds, some solid colours, some mixed colours; and they grow to varying heights. Some varieties get to 2'-3' tall, and others only 1' tall. Interesting, the Cherokee Rose looks like what we would call a York Rose. Is it a true rose, or something that just resembles one? York roses used to be very common around here but now you rarely see them :-( California poppies self seed themselves all over my garden every year. Just as well, because I don't plant anything :-) I love to see their sunny faces. Some of these flowers, like the columbine and the mountain laurel, don't look like they can be real. Isn't nature amazing? Edited to add photos that didn’t stick the first time around.

Productivity and disease susceptibility are the two major limiting factors in variety selection for peaches and nectarines in western Washington. Many varieties that do well in warmer areas are unproductive in the cooler marine climate of the Puget Sound region. So far in trials at Mount Vernon we have eliminated a number of poorly performing varieties. Some reliable producers have fruit that is not top quality. Showing good promise are several introductions from the Harrow, Ontario fruit breeding program, and some other new introductions from New Jersey, Michigan, and Georgia.

Peach leaf curl, bacterial canker, brown rot and coryneum blight all attack peach and nectarine trees, so they are not good candidates for a no-spray orchard regime. Nectarines in particular can be subject to fruit cracking, which damages the fruit even if the cracks remain dry and do not develop rot

I have a Frost also, and it had lots of fuzz babies early on this year, but they all quickly dropped. I'm attributing it to the wonky weather (it was so wet and so cold for so long), but this is just my uneducated guess. I'm hoping it will do better next year. :)

Several years ago I found and canned a wonderful peach; a med. size peach with a very intense red center around the pit and when canned, had the most beautiful pink liquid. I cannot remember the name, cannot find anything like it but I know it came from Eastern Washington. Red Haven, Red Globe...neither have that deep intense red by descriptions I have read. It is a freestone peach. Dos anyone have any idea what peach I am looking for?
