I have a seedling that I consider very good, so good that when it had to move I tried my best to save it for another location. So far, so good. It's very late and has fruit pulp which is more transparent than many and does not brown when cut open. So don't discount seedlings. The fruit may not be as large as some of the named cultivars, but size is not everything :-) You can train a feijoa to be a tree or keep as a multi-trunk "shrub". Your choice, although some seem to have their own idea of how to grow. As for pollination, many are at least partly self-fruitful but pollen is not very mobile so the wind is not much help and bees are not much interested in the flowers, although I have seen them visit them when a small tree was parked next to a field of wild flowers in bloom. For years my seedling bloomed but never gave me fruit. Then I found the video linked below. It made me laugh, but I tried it and voila! Now I do the pollinating every year, just to be sure. Thanks Larry, yes it's definitely much warmer outside than inside...we're still in the upper 80's to mid 90's and be stay in the 80's for at least another 6 weeks or more. I don't keep my a/c set too low or I would have to sell the house to pay my electric bill,lol... I'll try a couple in a day or two...some of them feel like they're starting to give a little when I gently squeeze them, although I'm not smelling the strong odor I've read about. Will update on how they taste.

...several, not two... I would say the pollen is viable from day two to day 4 or 5 after full opening of a blossom. I just use my fingers and they are covered with pollen, very obvious. So I try to work over the blooms every 2 or 3 days. Typical daytime temps are 65-80 in June here. After day 4 or 5 the pollen turns brown and the stamens loosen and rain down off the bush. Since there is a 2 or 3 day window of transferrable pollen per flower, I doubt that time-of-day is important. Definitely checkout that mini-climate versus feijoa fruiting for your locale. Remember that this plant is originally from the uplands of Paraguay / southern Brazil, and New Zealand is not known for hot weather. This year the bloom was early (mid-June) and done by 4 July, now I have many fruits that are noticeably enlarging, and of course a percentage that remain tiny and will do nothing. ------------------- Even tomato blooms will be adversely affected by 90+ degree weather, commercial growers likely use special varieties or know other tricks.

Well, I got two of the hybrid seedlings from Rolling River. I would not have purchased them if I had seem them that is for sure. There are really spindly/thin and don't see how this (what looks like a cutting) will become a bush. They are alive and growing though. Summer Winds had unnamed varieties for 9$ in much better shape. I bought two there and then saw a Coolidge at Home Depot for 18$. Picked that up and a month later see Naemetz (sp?) at HD for 20$ and pick that up. I move my spindly Rolling River ones out to some place in the yard and replace with the HD varieties. I also so Naemetz at Lowe's quite large trained as a tree for 35$ I think.
