Comments (46)- Texas Persimmon (Diospyros texana) - This is truly an underrated miracle tree of life! This large shrub/small tree not only produces copious crops of deliciously sweet berries, but is also a highly heat/drought-resistant xeriscape native that can still withstand low temperatures down to 5ð-10ð F. Moreover, it is an attractive ornamental complete with creamy bell flowers, multicolored trunks and rugged hardwood that can be used for woodworking. Note that is is dioecious though, so you need at least a male & female of each to bear fruit... But what other trees possess such a rare combination of form, function & low maintenance??? None that I can think of! Other overlooked candidates might include: - Oriental Raisin Tree (Hovenia dulcis) - This is a nice, large, fast-growing tree that bears sweet, edible peduncles tasting similar to a combination of raisin, clove, cinnamon and sugar. http://examine.com/supplements/Hovenia+dulcis/ (But do note that while it is not invasive in the US, it could be in some much hotter, tropical climates.) - Pineapple Guava (Feijoa sellowiana) - This large shrub/small tree has both edible flowers and fruits and is fairly low-maintenance. It is both quite pest and heat-resistant, needing only some sufficient watering during peak summer heat months. http://www.ediblelandscapingmadeeasy.com/2011/12/21/pineapple-guava-a-great-shrub-for-your-edible-landscape/#1 http://selectree.calpoly.edu/treedetail.lasso?rid=599 - All-In-One Almond Tree - Almond trees bear both beautiful flowers and edible almonds. - Mission Olive Tree - Olive trees not only bear healthy fruit & oil, but its leaves also serve as a great antimicrobial. It is drought-tolerant once established and can grow extremely old. - Moringa Oleifera (PKM1) Tree (Horseradish Tree) - This is another miraculous tree with multiple medicinal and health benefits. The leaves are edible and the crushed seeds even help purify water. It is also a very fast-growing and resilient softwood. http://miracletrees.org/ - Western Soapberry (Sapindus drummondii) - Soapberry does well in poor, dry or nutrient-deficient soils. The foliage is handsome, the flowers are fragrant and attract bees, and its soap nuts contain saponin, an antimicrobial, natural detergent. http://www.floridata.com/ref/s/sapi_sap.cfm - Medjool Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera) - If you got space for a palm tree, why not an edible date palm? http://science.howstuffworks.com/life/botany/date-palm-info.htm Here is a link that might be useful: Texas Persimmon This post was edited by blakrab on Mon, Jan 6, 14 at 21:19...See MorePineapple guava in California
Comments (12)Spanky Kitty, Three possibilities. 1. Are you feeding your feijoa? Stop. When you resume in two years use light PK no N. 2. Fruit is born on first and second year growth. A little pruning should help push new wood for fruiting. 3 Your variety might be lonely. There may have been a mate in the neighborhood that has been removed. No Tom cat, no kittens. Stop by your large box store and look for a Nazemetz (20 bush, 27-34 tree), plus a one gallon baby bush (3.99) There are some HD in Covina, but they can order one in a week. Put the baby near your existing tree and the Nazemetz somewhere in the same yard. Watch out. Meow....See MoreWhat tropical fruits are you growing?
Comments (117)I've started my first proper garden after years of living in smaller places. I'm currently growing: Cape Gooseberry (basically a weed in my garden) Pomegranate Blackberries (don't know the type) White, weeping mulberry (found on the property) Litchi / Lychee (nursery didn't label the type) Avocado (Fuerte & have been advised to get a Haas too) Apricot (Cape Early, a South African cultivar) Apple (Early Red one & looking for a tart, green pollinator/pie apple) Eureka lemon Unidentified dwarf lemon (found on property) Shaddock pomelo, red flesh Peach (Oom Sarel, a large South African cultivar) Two fruits that I'm growing, but I've never tasted before: - Miracle Fruit (3 seedlings about 20cm, under glass & one recently planted outside). I've served the pills for a party. - Pepino Got a whole of herbs, peppers and veggies too. I'm looking to replace granadilla / passion fruit and mangoes that I've grown before. I don't care for the taste of granadilla but I love the Passion flowers. I live north of Johannesburg in South Africa & it's spring time here. I want to grow some of the traditional fruit trees I grew up with, like delicious sweet Marula (sclerocarya birrea). Marula makes a small, sweet fruit that you can eat fresh when it turns yellow, can ferment into a traditional beer and leaves a hard seed with a sweet nut. Other traditional trees are Milk plum (Englerophytum magalismontanum) & Moepel (Mimusops zeyheri)...I don't know it's English name but I see it's part of the Sapoteceae genus....See MoreNorthern California Roll Call!!!! 2.0
Comments (67)I used to garden in redwood raised bed boxes until the redwoods growing in my yard took them back. Boxes toward the front of the picture, redwoods in the background. This one gives a better sense of how big they are, which I'm told is how far the roots go. I gave up fighting with the roots. The planters are "sub-irrigation" or "self-catering planters", mostly Earthboxes, but at least one of them seems to have more space for water than soil. I "smuggled" some garlic from France last year, and put them in one of these last October, and most of the roots are directly in the water. I don't have any real hydroponic set ups though. PS I actually brought the garlic back peeled so it was legal.it is sending up scales as we speak! Non edible PSS I notice the original roll call thread is open again. Is there a mod who can combine them? Original Northern California Roll Call...See MoreJuan Casero (Zone 9b/Brevard, FL)
