Florida squirrels!! ARG!
Comments (52)Well, I found this thread that was started almost a year ago to the day. Since I was late in starting my spring garden last year, I guess that might have been why I had NO problem with squirrels. This year I was able to get an early start and had most seeds/seedlings in the ground by mid-February (I live in the Largo/Seminole area). Here it is March 9th and the squirrels have pretty much destroyed at least half of each raised bed (I have 6). Planting corn was a joke. I planted it 3 weekends in a row and at first (duh) couldn't figure out what happened. But when the seedlings started getting chewed, and I had holes everywhere, it dawned on me. I sprinkled cayenne pepper over the watermelon seed mound I just replanted yesterday... only to go out this morning and find that they clearly like peppered watermelon seeds just as well as plain. I bought critter ridder yesterday too... and they dug right through it with no hesitation. I have taken the advice to put sunflower seeds on the opposite end of my garden and just give them something else to eat, but so far they haven't paid any notice. I guess I have to give it a few days. I'm an animal lover too, but boy do I get pissed off when I walk out every morning and see the damage they've done. Between them and moles, I feel like I'm losing the battle with organic, humane gardening....See MoreOK, what just scared the crap out of me!!????
Comments (36)Wow this is an old thread! Well, I do believe it was a fisher cat. We have them here now and several of them too! I had seen one squashed in the road a few weeks back. They are quite mean critters. Since I started this thread years ago there was a woman who was running/ walking her dog in Ct. At black pond. Which is maybe 10 to 15 minutes from my house, anyway she and her dog were attacked my a juvenile mountain lion. I hear she and her dog survived but I do not know the full story. Also since then I had been doing some reading up on mountain lions. And also since then I have had two rescued wimpy but wonderful greyhounds. One night while I was taking them out for their final nightly "run" up in the woods to do their business, they both stopped dead in their tracks. I had an enclosure put together up in the woods with several metal fence in a roll type deal and a gate with latest h that we installed. The dogs stopped dead and was staring up towards the back of the enclosure. I tool my spotlight and started looking around. About 50 feet on the other side of the fence in the back were red and green shining eyes. A tan head and chest. It moved sideways , turning it's body and it was without a doubt a mountain lion! Needless to say I yelled for the dogs to go to the house and we ran and went inside. It didn't seem to follow us. Thankfully. But my town is filled with wildlife , I've seen everything but moose in town. We all have to learn to coexhist. Ciao all! Is there a way to delete this thread?...See MoreProtection from squirrells
Comments (28)I may be the only one that didn't get that...but I didn't get it. About the repellent...apparently there is no universal, great, common-household-item solution. Garlic, pepper, hot pepper, cinnamon, lemons, people urine, and fox urine all seem to work to some degree for a while. The fox urine, probably works best, but has other drawbacks like expense, not a normal household item, and even possible ethics problems associated with some sources. All have to be reapplied pretty regularly and especially after rainfall. Well, at least I tried to find the magic solution, but maybe there is none....See MoreSquirrels eat tomato's?
Comments (66)I am laughing my head off because I am having the same battle. My prize Gold Medal tomatoes that I have been anxiously waiting all summer for have been attacked, both the lower ones and the higher ones. I put rigid meshing around them and the bugger chewed thru them too! Personally, I'm thinking raccoon, but who knows. I'm finding cherries, green and ripe all over the ground with the insides sucked out. Other tomatoes they aren't bothering. It seems the tomatoes that are in the ground next to a fence are at the most risk. My container tomato plants have had fewer attacks. It's not fair! I am going to try blood meal for next year, altho permanently eliminating them has crossed my mind! I have now picked most of my tomatoes and brought them in otherwise I won't have one to eat! AAAHHH! Sharon...See Morewild_forager
