Comments (4)I was so happy my upside down tomatos were giving me fruit!!! Then I started finding hunks being taken out of the toms that were turning color Hmmmm... caught the invader red handed so to speak. A red headed woodpecker! He soon tired of me removing the fruit just before completly changing color. Two days later, my toms were simply gone off the vines. Vanishing whole. Thats when I caught an incredibly hungry squirrel! He returned (simply to torment me) at will, and stripped all of my plants in three days. Even with everything I threw at it. My husband suggested I tether the cat to the plant stand, but the squirrel would probobly torment her too!! Seriously, I will try some of the suggestions here, and hope to have some better luck. BTW we have been having pretty serious drought conditions. Maybe they are just thirsty....See MoreSquirrel proof tomatoes?
Comments (21)I did not have any luck last year waiting till 'first blush' to pick my tomatoes as the squirrels didn't care what color they were; they'd grab them, eat half of them and toss them in my yard. Before my first year of gardening (last year), I actually liked squirrels. I'd think to myself "They can have some and I can have some and we'll all be happy". But no. They had some and I had one. They dug up all my chamomile, basil, thyme and oregano and left them in the sun to die. I don't like them anymore and think of them as a rodent infestation that the city refuses to deal with. Maybe it's different for those of us that live near parks full of them, but this year I am fencing around my garden with strips of bird netting twisted like barbed wire 3 feet up all the way across. If that doesn't work I'll be going with a capsicum based spray around everything. And if that doesn't work I'll be posting warning signs in my yard and setting up an electric fence. Very frustrating. :(...See MoreProtect Tomatoes from Squirrels
Comments (24)Luckily for me, my neighbor has an apple tree that they mostly ignore. They also have a hawthorn bush. I have a concord grapevine in my yard but don't really care whether I get any grapes off of it, as well as 3 small fig trees. Squirrels mostly ignore my tomatoes until they eat all the other fruit available to them. Late in the season, before the acorns really start on the neighborhood oak trees, I get some squirrel trouble. Covering the tomatoes with organza bags has worked well for me in that situation. I also cover about a third of my figs for me and leave the rest for the birds and squirrels. It works, even though a squirrel could easily rip through if it wanted. The trick is, if there's plenty else around to eat, even a slight deterrent like netting or gauze can encourage a squirrel to look elsewhere. But if your tomatoes are the only food around, a determined squirrel won't blink twice at overcoming all kinds of barriers. Unfortunately, people tend to consider fruit and nut trees and bushes, especially the less ornamental native kind, to be pest plants that ruin their nice manicured landscaping. So in places where people have cut down those kinds of plants, your garden is the best party going for the squirrels....See Morejaime53
