Why do my tomatoes need so much water?!

I'm growing them in pots. I think they require possibly up to 10 inches of water a week. If I do not water them every other day, they start to limp, shrivel, etc. Immediately (a few hours) after watering they look healthy again. Is it a better idea to grow them in the garden beds next year and use the pots for something else, like peppers?

I would guess maybe it's that the soil drains too fast, but none of the other vegetables in the raised beds require water in the way these tomatoes do. They have been a serious PITA.

I have a water gauge in one of the pots and they do go from wet to dry by the 2nd day.

pot too small ...

media too porous ...

over fertilization ... meaning the pot is over full of roots??

you might not know.. until you dig it out ...

is your pot in full sun and black ... maybe august heat is heating the pot too much ... try shading it ...

Where are you?

Plants in pots require more water (in terms of inches over the surface) because their roots can't go deep or spread out to find the water you applied last week.

Try them in the garden, mulched well, and see what happens.

Peppers do better as "free range" plants, too.

OH, I get Annies Catalog but will have to go to her website and look for the tomato seedlings! I did order already from Wild Boar. I never been one to have any patience, I ordered the tomato seeds from Wild Boar Farms that I wanted. I read on their website that tomato seeds are good for ten years so I guess mine will be fine until I start them next spring! I ordered - Black And Brown Boar Red Boar Pink Boar Sweet Carneros Pink Pink Berkley Tie Dye I really have to start seeds next spring as I want to grow these. Plus there is another type of tomatoes that I want to grow and those are The New Dwarfs. I know plants of those will not be available locally so seeds it is. So why exactly do worms love coffee grounds so much?

I don't think it's correct to say that worms "love" used coffee grounds, at least not in the way they react to melon rinds or corn meal, by visibly flocking to them while wiggling happily. I think coffee grounds just have a much longer lead time before they become worm-edible, possibly because it takes a fungal process to break down the cellulose component of the beans. I used to put my used coffee grounds in the bin still in their paper cone filter, but I found this creates a long-lasting clump of grounds that tends to dry out and become impervious to rewetting, and takes an extraordinarily long time to start breaking down on its own. The other drawback to solid masses of grounds is that they will heat up, which you can really notice if you dig around in the bin with your bare hands. Now I dump the grounds out of the filter and mix them together with the other food scraps.

Sorry, you are disappointed with your cherries. The Earthbox is a great product so it may be just your variety choices as mentioned. I also find with some tomatoes the flavors improve as the days pass. While yellow pear may have some admirers there are many who find the taste bland and the texture yukky--I am in the latter camp. Can't imagine it being tart though--maybe it is just the first few off the vine. Hopefully you will like them better given a little bit more time. A great SWEET red cherry available most everywhere is Sweet Million or Sweet 100--taste like candy (Psss, don't tell anyone but I like them better than SunGold). Hopefully you got that one and will like them more and more as they ripen. Not sure which other type of cherry you may have purchased?? I have read that tomato plants need full sun to develop maximum sweetness--hope you have those conditions.

I'm in my mid-40's and only married 3 years. I met DH when I was 40. I like to tell him that if I had to wait this long for him, he was worth it! 1.We match up very well personality wise (though he is introverted and I am extroverted--like islandgal said we balance each other out). 2. We have similar modest family backgrounds, and we both put ourselves through graduate/professional school, so when we met it was almost like we'd known each other. 3. We have similar interests in music and love to go to live music events together. 4. LOL, he was right when he said white for the paneling in the kitchen without realizing there are literally 100 shades of white. He also insisted on granite slab for the countertops. 5. He's not handy, but he at least knows that. We are happy to call professionals for things beyond our capabilities, which is pretty much anything beyond painting. He never had pets and took on me with three cats after we got married. He was at my side when we had to put one down a couple of weeks ago due to kidney failure. He truly loves me for who I am. He likes a woman with curves. Enough said.

the pots are in full sun- I am in MA. & they are black. I will try them in the garden next year.

Any ideas on what does well in pots? herbs?

Most anything can be grown in a pot. But I think most any plant will be more vigorous grown in the ground.

Herbs are good ones for pots. I find pots are my best way to grow cilantro. But that's because I can bring it inside to try and delay bolting. I grow a lot of peppers in pots as well because I want to bring them inside over the winter without trying to dig them out of the ground. I also grow carrots because there are so many rocks around me that my options are either growing them in containers or building more raised beds than I can afford, or putting up with the consequences or rocky soil for carrots.

Make sure you have a layer of mulch on top of the pots.

Also, if you can put the pots inside other bigger pots, that will help. If not, maybe try to change the color to something lighter so it reflects the sun. Maybe wrap them in white towells??
