Agree that unlike normal garden plants, container plants all require regular nutrient supplements to compensate for all the nutrients that wash out whenever you water. Unfortunately it isn't as easy to time those applications to the growth cycle of the plants as it is when planted in ground. Normally with tomatoes I only feed after each cycle of fruit set but when it is in a container it isn't possible to wait that long between feedings or the plant suffers. Frequency of application also depends on which type fertilizer you are using. You might check with the folks over on the Container gardening forum for tips on how they do it. Dave

Bwahahaha. Evidently, my butt is not SO out of control that the zukes couldn't handle it. They're looking to be just fine, and I even hacked off a 6-incher from the most crushed one today. As we speak, I am eating the fruits of my ass-smashed plants, so...YAY! As far as what I was wearing (lol), I fell in wearing yoga pants, flip flops and a tank top. Unfortunately, I couldn't tell you if I got stabbed or not, as the shock from the zucchini butt dive with a 2 1/2 twist was enough to render me totally impervious to pain. /zuke flex

Ya know, I hadn't even thought about looking for a bugger that blends in---no wonder I didn't see anything yesterday while searching for whatever it is that is having lunch at my Brug's expense. I found a rather icky looking green spider that had a bee tethered to long single webbing but the spider stayed inside the flower all day and night, with bee dangling. After responding to these posts I am going to go look up hornworm and later today I'll look more closely at the underside of the leaves. Wonderful information -- Thanks again! Whenever someone new goes out to the back yard and starts praising my Double Delight Tree or any of my other little plants, I find myself re-directing them to my Brug. Sort of like one of those stage mothers that want all the attention on their one special child while slighting her other kids in the process. It's as if I want ALL the attention on my Brug --- nothing like being TBO (Totally Brug Obsessed) huh? Just when I thought we were really into Autumn and put a thermo blanket on the bed, up comes 90 degree weather the early part of this past week and I had already adjusted my watering habits for Autumn a couple weeks before. So now that you said 'dried out', I'm wondering if maybe that hot spell we had last week had something to do with it? All I know is that I baby my Brug -- my family calls it "Mom's precious Angel Baby" and I had never noticed anything like this so I'm going to really watch closely the watering situation from now on. I too had done a bit of searching on the web for the browning, crunchy that is happening before the flower is even open but couldn't find anything. I didn't search for hours but did search. That's what made me start looking here at GW. First I looked in the S. Calif. Discussions. Did a search there and some other discussions and somehow ran into this discussion board exclusively for Brugs. You can probably imagine how excited I was to find you all! I have two local nurseries, both are privately run. We must be going to the closest at the wrong times because it seems to always be closed whenever we go by with plans to stop. The other is run by a very nice old man. You ask him what time it is and he'll tell you how to make a Swiss Watch. He doesn't seem to be able to stay on topic and I never really get answers to my questions. But he does have some wonderful plants at great prices although he doesn't have any Brugs. The other two 'nurseries' within decent driving distance are Home-Depot and Lowes. You and Karmahappytoes both mentioned the drying/water and as I told Karmahappytoes, we did have unusually dry/very hot weather last week. I had already changed my watering habits for the onset of Autumn when we were hit with 90+ degree weather out of nowhere. We don't have a sprinkler system, I hand-water all my plants. Now that you've both mentioned it, it's probably likely that I didn't adjust my watering to compensate for those hot, hot days. I'll be more careful from now on, that's for sure!
