Beyond the drain hole question. Even though your containers look reasonable -- are they 5-gallon size? -- your plants in first 3 images ran short of water somewhere along the way. Most look short of nitrogen. Even if 5-gallon size, that's small for the huge watermelon. Needs lots of water for the fruit. Plus you have the complication that the containers are on a concrete surface which heats up considerably and reflects *lots* of heat onto the sides of the containers. As a result, roots die on the sunny side. And if the water immediately runs oust of the containers, the potting mix -- I assume you used potting mix -- dried out and has pulled away from the sides. If so, set in a tub of deep water to rehydrate. MAXIMUM 20 minutes, or you'll drown your treasures. Here is a link that might be useful: your images

Miracle Grow isn't specifically formulated for tomatoes, it is a good type for plant growth but you need a fertilzer which is better for flowering and fruiting. Any hardware or garden center will have vegetable fertilers and some may even have tomato fertilzers--either one is a better choice for your tomatoes than just plain MG. Follow the instructions on the package and your all set. T

Sure. There are hundreds of them and hundreds of opinions too so you'll get lots of answers to only add to the confusion. Over on the Growing Tomatoes forum there are probably 50 different current discussions about "the best fertilizer" and about the only thing they have in common is it should be well-balanced and also provide micro-nutrients. Tomatoes and cukes have approx. the same nutrient needs, just different timing of application. So the crucial question is are we talking about organic or synthetic? Makes a big difference to many people. And are we talking about plants in the ground or plants in containers? Makes a big difference too. And do you prefer liquids or granular ferts? "One more question, do you fertilize regularly through the growing season then?" The general answer is yes as the plant is using up the nutrients as it grows. How often all depends on the type of fertilizer you use which is why label directions are imnportant. With dry/granular ferts they normally get a dose mixed into the soil before planting, a side dressing with another dose right after first fruit set, and another long about mid-season. If you have an extra long growing season as you and I do they can also use a fourth dose side-dressing about 6 weeks later to hold them until frost. With liquid supplements they are fed more frequently as PC said. Usually every 10-14 days depending on the fert you choose. This is for inground plants, not container plants. Container plants have to be fed weekly in most cases when using liquids and every two weeks with granular. I recommended liquid ferts above since you have mixed crops in the same small area and mixed perennials with an annual - for future reference that's not a great idea ;-). The liquids are easier to spot feed specific plants. For example, if you over-dosed your berries with the nitrogen the tomato needs early on then you'll get big berry plants but few berries. Dave
