Corn Smut -- how to prevent it next year

Yes, I searched but didn't find the answer to my question. :-)

Poor hubby lost his entire corn crop (okay, it was small, but his first attempt) to corn smut. The fungus had progressed quite far before he noticed...gray, fingerlike blobs protrduing from all ears...he's not the most attentive gardener! ;-) He pulled all the affected stalks and disposed of them far from his corn plot. Is it safe to plant next year's corn in the same location, or will the fungus remain in the soil and destroy next year's crop too? Is there anything else, besides lowering moisture and paying more attention, we should do to prevent a recurrence?
