"Fruit flies" are really unlikely, since there's nothing for them to eat or lay eggs on in a pothos. They have no reason to be there.

Something that *might* have a reason to be there is fungus gnats. They are about the same size as fruit flies, but they're skinnier and black (kind of mosquitoish, but much smaller), where fruit flies are roughly football-shaped and brown.

The other possibilities are:

Someone is burying fruit in your pothos, for reasons only they know. In which case they should be shown the refrigerator and encouraged to use it.

You have overripe fruit elsewhere in your abode, and you've just happened to notice fruit flies more near the plants.

If fungus gnats are the problem, like I suspect, they're no big deal. The larvae eat organic matter from soil, and sometimes also new roots (which can be bad if you're trying to start seedlings), but the adults don't eat anything, and they're not dangerous. Once in a while they'll fly into an open mouth or nose: it's alarming, but it won't kill you.

You can use insecticide if you want, but it's not likely to help as much as keeping the plants drier. Pothos is good in that it's one of those plants that gives you a visible droop when it's gotten too dry: for at least a few waterings, you might let it get to the point where you can see it beginning to droop before watering it again. It won't do the plant any favors, but it'll help you train yourself to water less.

Fungus gnats will return if things get too wet again, unless you do something really drastic like switching the plants over to hydroponics (which pothos would be thrilled with, by the way) or something.

This is usually a sign of overwatering, cut back your watering to once every 8-10 days at least & that should do it. I don't let mine dry out to wrinkle or droop stage, but they easily go 10 days to 2 wks w/out water, for some reason I water these very irregularly.

Also, pls. be sure your pots have a drainage hole. Overwatering is the one, surefire way to kill Pothos.

I would suggest you quarantine your pothos in a room by itself and treat it. Do a search under houseplants for fungus gnats - there are about a zillion treatments for it. Personally I suggest Gnatrol or mosquito dunks. I would also treat any other plants that have been in the same room as the infected pothos just to be safe. Once they are gone, ease up on the watering. Fungus gnat larvae love wet soil.

Theres another post somehwere on this site, that suggested using miracle grow on your plants, seems to kill the fung.gnats.....although it also kills good bacteria and fungi......I have fungas gnats, and this is the approach I am going to try next week to try and eradicate them.

Thanks. They were gnats of course. I have my pothos in a plastic pot with drainage holes. At the frequency that I was watering, the plant was too wet. I like plastic pots because I seem to have to water less with them. I work erratic hours and sometimes forget to water the poor creatures in my house, so I use the plastic pots as a protectant against that. I treated the plant and let it dry out. That seems to have solved the problem. I'll water it much less frequently from now on. These are my first houseplants, so I'm still learning. As an example, I just repotted my Easter Lily not realizing they won't survive as a houseplant. Oh well, can't be an expret in everything!

If you really want a pot that sucks up water, use clay. Though it's unnecessary growing Pothos.
I believe clay pots work best for cactus and succulents.
Water when soil feels dry/crumbly. Don't water by schedule. Watering is the number one killer of plants, at least of what I read a yr or so ago. As time passes, you'll get a feel when your plants need a drink.
Wet soil/dry air invites fungus gnats. To rid the problem, water less..Make sure your Pothos isn't overpotted..(too large a pot) A tad smaller container means soil will dry out quicker..It's best to repot when roots stick out of drainage holes..Then go one-two sizes up.
Fresh air/fan helps, too..I keep a fan running on low during winter months..as soon as it warms, up goes windows.
I'm not sure where you live, but if you have access to an outdoor garden, plant Easter lily in soil..It's not definate, but sometimes they come up the following yr, and even flower..This is also done w/florist mums, but it's not 100%..Still worth a try..Toni

I find if I use a mix with peat I have fungus gnats. I quit using peat based soil and don't have that problem as bad.
