Hi Chandres. Nope, you're definately not making a mountain out of a molehill. Your question is important, especially to those who grow 50+ plants.
I keep track of fertilizing, plants in bloom, new plants (name/dates/where purchased) in a Daily Journal/Planner published by Birds & Blooms magazine. Its cost is 20.00 per year. The planner has several sections for entries, pics and information regarding wildlife and plants.
In one section, I write dates fertilized and Superthrived, which plants are in bloom. Off the side of each page I list newly purchased plants..(date, where purchased, height,) In the center, I keep a daily diary.
Before B&B's planner, I bought an ordinary Schedule/planner sold in stores. Nothing fancy.
Before that, I used a regular calendar. Since I fertilize once a month (depending on plant) it was simple. Pick a day of the month, when you have time, w/some of us, lots of time, lol, jot down directly 'after; actually feeding. (this way there's no chance of mixup) The problem using an ordinary calander is space. If you're feeding 300 plants, it's almost impossible listing each plant in a little square box. What I did/do is start fertilizing by family. One day, say Philos, the next Peps, etc. It's much easier keeping track. There's probably easier ways, but I want to be as specific as possilble. This way there's no doubt whether or not a plant was fertilized.
I'd like to hear ways others keep track. Toni

Personally, I've found perfectionism & plants don't go together, they're not machines or computers & don't require that (IMO).

I DO think you're both making this wayyyyyy too complicated. I have neither the time or the patience for all this.

Earlier in my collecting, when I had abt 200 plants, I tried to keep a bit of a journal, that became a project in itself, which was NOT what I intended, took wayyyy too much time so I abandoned it.

Ultimately, I chose to put all info. relevant to me on the tag(s) (I live alone, so no one's gonna take the tag out of the pot). Sometimes there are several tags in the pot if I've had the plant more than a few yrs.

I think people find fertilizers more important than the plants do, really (I know you'll disagree Toni ;>) ). I'll fertilize abt once a month for the next few months, tho' now that I use E VF-11, it says not to use w/ fertilizer, I'm still pondering that.

I fertilize everything at the same time all over the aptmt & then I'm done. Some of the succs, I fertilize only once or twice a year. Ultimately, the surest way I've found is to stick a post-it note w/ a date on the jug(s) of fertilizer.

This year I also got fish meal food sticks (?) which I haven't tried yet ... hum ... thanks for reminding me.

I just went & put them into some plants. Interesting experiment, I'm only putting them into plants of which I have 2 separate pots, 1 I'll do, the other I won't. Since the sticks get buried into the mix, I realized I have to mark the pots I've done it to (used 1/4" quilter's tape)... we shall see!!

My first perfectionist desire is to create an Excel spreadsheet with all the info on it...
Okay, I never thought of just putting the date on the jug of fertilizer, and doing them all at once, maybe because I have a tendency to overcomplicate things, maybe because different plants have different fertilizers at different rates. The main fertilizer I use says every two weeks, but I'm already not following that for several of my plants, since everything I've researched says once per month, and my lithops and lapidaria are fed only twice yearly. I think that's the only thing that would be confusing... that and the different fertilizers for different plants. Do I just keep up with Jug #1 for these plants, #2 for these, #3 for these, and the last dates watered?

Karen, you're funny. LOL..I really do NOT fertilize plants as often as you think. Those that get regular feedings are Hibs (slow release hib food once every 3 months.) Citrus, Gardenias, Geraniums, and African Violets are on regular diets, though Citrus also are fert with slow-release, once every 3 months. C&S's 2-3 times in summer. Most other tropicals once a month. I haven't the time or inclination to fert more than that. Superthrive is another thing. Plants, (not C&S) get a monthly dose. 4 drops per gallon of water.
In autumn, before plants come in, I foliar feed using Fish Emulsion, and my brew to prevent insects and as a last feeding of the year. It works fine. No insects since.

Chandres, using a calander, jot dates you fertilize. Writing dates on a hanging calander is simple. If you fert all plants in a day, that's even better, but you mentioned using different fert brands, so write dates you fert with one brand, then the next day/time, jot that date too. It's simple, takes seconds. No major work involved. plus there's no mix up which plants were fert using specific brands that month. Toni
