Mother-In-Law's Tongue Clippings!!!

I took some clippings from my Mother-In-Laws Mother-In-Law's Tongue plant... say that five times fast. lol. I read that you are supposed to let them dry for two or three days before you place them in soil to let them root. They also say not to water them at all because it can cause rot. I was wondering if anyone has done this before, and what worked, or didn't work for you? Thank you for your response, Angel.

I've done them without drying first but drying might be a good idea. You must keep the soil at least a bit moist so the roots don't die, but don't keep it soggy. Be very patient. Mine took nearly a year before I got a new sprout!!

It will do much better if you learn to call it Sanseveria, it is a sensitive plant when it comes to nomenclature. VBG etc.

I don't grow many of these, but when mine became a tangled ball of roots like this I just broke each cluster apart and let them dry out of soil for a day. Then potted them in their new home. They seem to be doing well as I find these plants impossible to kill. Sometimes they sit without water for months when I forget / ignore them and still look perfectly fine, not to mention they seem to grow like weeds. Is there a drain hole in the pot, if not you should put one in or repot into something with drainage. If it does drain, let it dry out completely before you water, use a dowel stuck into the soil to test, and then water thoroughly (until a bit of water runs out of the bottom of the pot). If it's not getting overwatered then it might just want a bit more light, maybe move it closer to the window. I used to have a couple in my office that got virtually no natural light and they grew very tall and eventually fell over. Also they might appreciate a bit of fertilizer....

Not sure what you mean by "clippings" of these.
Sans. (short for Sansevieria, this is the correct spelling), are usually are propagated by taking whole single leaves (or divisions, pups, young plantlets that tend to rise from the base of the parent plant).

I agree w/ what you've heard/read abt keeping them dry after potting up. I disagree w/ Watergal abt keeping the soil moist; a leaf being used to create a new plant has no roots a all & the leaf itself will have enough water reserves to get it started w/out watering. Also keeping the soil moist tends to rot the leaf before it can take root. This takes a long time, can take up to a year!

There's lots of info. on how to do this; try searching at the Cactus & Succulent Forum & also pls. check the Sansevieria Forum, also at GW. Try for somehting like "starting Sans. from leaves" or "starting Snake Plants from leaves".
