How do you isolate new plants in a small space?

I know the virtues of isolating a new plant for a while, but I was wondering how you do it when you don't have much space. Especially the prime real estate by the windows. Most of my plants live in my room, in shelves in front of the south facing windows. For those of you who do isolate in small spaces, how do you do it, and for how long? How do you deal with the issue of giving them enough light while they are in isolation, if you don't use supplemental lighting? How far away do new plants need to be in order to be considered 'isolated'?
