I'll try. Only the top plant is large enough to perhaps bear any fruit this yr. Cut the smaller plant back severely and train the strongest shoot up a stake to try for fruit next yr. When that shoot reaches the top wire, pinch it back to get a shoot running in each direction. Those shoots, which grow this yr, will produce fruit next yr. So don't prune them off next winter. On the larger plant I cann't tell what is last yrs wood and what is older. Only last yrs wood will bear this yr. If you are going to get fruit this yr it will be on the shoot labeled B1. Cut off that bottom shoot going left. Also cut off the shoot just to the left of B1. It looks like older wood. Always cut off as much older wood as possible while leaving enough of last years wood to produce a crop. Now you are left with the B1 shoot that branches right and left. These canes are the one label C1 and above. If they are last yrs wood, they may fruit this yr. Cut off every side branch below C1. Keep one cane at C1 or higher going in each direction and see if they fruit. Each yr after this you will keep one cane going in each direction that grew the prior yr and cut off all other canes. This gives you a T shaped framework after pruning each yr. It's as simple as that. Your vines lack enough vigor to bear much fruit. They either need more water or more fertilizer, assuming they are getting enough light. The Fruitnut

This is a fun little experiment so definitely keep us posted. I think we're all learning something here. :) Rooting under glass in this case, to me, means cutting a short section of stem, sticking it either in to a pot of good potting soil, or sticking it in to the ground, and then watering well and either covering the cutting/stem with a bell jar, glass, or plastic bag etc to make a mini-greenhouse. If you have 14 feet to work with, yes "mixing it up" would mean hacking it in to smaller pieces and trying different strategies. If it was mine, I'd cut it in to 12 inch sections (keeping track of which end was pointed to the original roots and which was pointed to the branch tip) and I'd try different strategies: rooting in water indoors, rooting in water outdoors, rooting in potting soil indoors, rooting in potting soil outdoors (covered), sticking some in soil outdoors (maybe some with, or some without, the little greenhouses), and so on, just to improve your chances for success. I bet you'll get some success from one of these methods. I wouldn't add manure etc to the soil where you're rooting them--sometings that can encourage rot or burn etc. I'm sure they'll love it once they're rooted and you're ready to plant them to their new permanent home. Keep the updates coming as I'd love to know what method succeeds for you since I've always rooted only dormant stems (and quite lazily at that with a gentle shove of the stem in to the ground or potting soil in winter). I grow a few varieties of grapes but not sure I would call myself an expert. From your pictures, it looks like you have one or more fungal infections on your grapes. The treatment is essentially the same if it is black rot, downy mildew, phomopsis cane, etc. At the end of the season, you'll need to prune off the infected canes, clean up around the vines, and make sure that there are no infected grapes laying around. Start the vine on a spray program next year and it should clear up. My vines looked worse last year but this year I followed the spray program and they are nearly perfect. I also have an old grape vine. In the Fall I am going to build a better trellis with wood posts and an overhang. This vine sits outside our dining room window and unfortunately looks like a pile of weeds to most people. Originally my plan was to cut the vine way back to just the head and cordons. It looks like the previous owner trained the vine to have upper and lower cordons. Since the first photo there has been some growth, I was hoping to get to trimming before growth started. Should I cut the canes back to the cordons? Should I just let it grow for this season? It really looks like a mess right now.
