How do you like my dinosaur egg planter

Well I finished this dino egg planter (at least that is what I call it) last night and I think I really like it. I am not entirely pleased with the painting job but it ain't too bad. How do you like it??

It looks good to me! Is that a real rock it is sitting on or did you make that too? Either way it is a great presentation .

Hi Laura; it is a real rock that I just cemented the egg to. The rock had a natural depression that the egg sat in just fine and it also has some fossils that kinda makes it go with the theme. I guess my rock hunting/saving habit is paying off...grins.

I grew up on a chicken ranch in the 40's&50's. The big "egg factories" were introduced in the 50's. We had approximately 1400-1500 chickens at a time. The big farms have thousands.Our chickens lived in large chicken houses and we allowed them to free range for a short time whenever possible. We would only let out the hens in one house at a time. We collected eggs three times a day in metal baskets, took them to our basement where they were cleaned with a sanding block if needed, weighed and packed in crates. The PCA truck came twice a week to pick up the eggs for market. Under no circumstances were we to ever wash the eggs. That was the PCA rules. Any eggs that were not easy to clean by sanding were washed and used quickly by our family. My parents said washing meant that the life of the egg was shortened.

Karen, I have a Pysanky (sp? --I forgot!) kit and I really, really want to do a good --just ONE good Pysanky egg! I've also done a couple of polymer clay eggs but they leave a lot to be desired, so I'd like to do something more worthy of keeping. I used to decorate a wooden egg each Easter for my sons, using nothing but paint pens. The first one I did was my favorite: green, orange, purple and black. I started a design at the bottom and just winging it, went all the way up. The last one I did that way was green, blue and white in a "faux millefiori", but when I stopped just over halfway and didn't get back to it all year, I abandoned the tradition. :--( I really would like to get back to that. Over medium with the white done and the yolk runny. Years ago at a Denny's i ordered them that way and when she brought them to me that white looked like it hadn't even touched the pan.I sent them back and told them the chicken was still alive and running around the plate!!!DH wasn't happy,he always thought you had to eat it whatever way they bring it and not make a fuss.I said not me,i'm paying for it and i want it the way i asked for it.He's since gtten used to me,and he'll even send things back now if they aren't right.

Thanks for the egg nog info; it doesn't look like any ones favourite 'beverage of choice'. (and beverage is one of those words we almost never use over here; don't know why) Paula, glad you found out about the 'Feast of Stephen'. 26th Dec more commonly called Boxing Day in the UK and a public holiday, except for the mad rush to the 'Sales'. I think it is still known as St Stephen's Day in Ireland and over there they used to have a tradition of killing wrens (the tiny bird) on that day . . . again no idea why. Tim thanks for the link to the Huron carol, simple and quite different. Certainly beats White Christmas or Rudloph the Red Nosed Reindeer. To me 'Deck the Halls' doesn't sound Welsh, so many of their old tunes are in the minor key and have a plaintive lyrical quality. But I am no musical expert! I think it looks neat. I like the texture on the outside of the egg.

Very very nice! It definitely looks like a fossil and the inside color makes it come alive. I wouldn't want to take away the beauty of it by putting a plant in it. Does it have a drainage hole?

thanks for all the compliments! I don't have anyone other than my DH that I can get critiques from and "oh, that's cool!" is not very constructive..grins.

Kim: I forgot to add a drainage hole to this planter so will just use a pot to put inside it. I think I will use a small pot cause I like the inside color too! I am too chicken to try and drill a hole now. Power tools don't always agree with me...another story.

I like it and would like to buy about 6 for a Kinder evolutionary garden. How big is it. We have 20 kids that would like to plant a bulb each.

Doll, you can always put crushed pots or gravel at the bottom of the planter.
