Pruning a Reliant Peach Tree

Being this far north, we know very little about peach trees. I'm not the only person I know that has successfully grown the 'Reliant', only to kill it with pruning.

I have another one growing now and it too seems topheavy with lots of crossing branches that should be cleared away, by my way of thinking. I do not trust my way of thinking when it comes to peach trees anymore.

If this were an apple tree I would simply cut out the center and trim away errant branches while dormant in the Spring. What can safely be done with a peach tree that needs pruning? Thank you. :)
