FUYU Persimmon tree dropping all it's buds :( What's wrong?

Hi there,

I bought a FUYU persimmon tree about 3 weeks ago, it's about 6 feet tall,and it had about 20-30 flowering buds on it and you could see some of the fruit even developing on these buds. I have not transplated it into the ground yet as I am re-landscaping my backyard, however i've been making sure that it gets enough water etc.

Well just about a week and a half ago, seems like very day, these buds are now falling off! Here is a picture of them falling into the pot. There's a lot more now than a week ago when I took this pic.

Of the 20 or 30 buds that were on there when I first bought the tree, there's probably 5-7 left. Any idea why they're falling off? If they all fall off, i guess I won't get any fruit this Oct/Nov. :( I thought i was gonna get a bunch when i first bought the tree, but apparently not anymore. When do FUYU persimmon's normally start flowering and how long does it take for a fruit to grow/ripen from the time it starts flowering?

Why is the bottom of the trunk black? Water? Maybe you are overwatering it and it is drowning, and that's why the buds are dropping.

It usually takes some time before persimmons fruit after you plant them. My experience is that the fruits on the plant when you buy it always drop. Next year you probably will get 2-3 fruits and in two years, if persimmon is comfortable at your place, you will have first real crop.

It could be a problem with just that one limb. Or it could have gotten damaged by a herbicide spray. In any case there is not a lot to do. This time of year the tree probably doesn't need much if any water so I doubt it is drying out. If the soil is not dry don't water at all, if anything you may be overwatering. Scott

The pot is 25 gallon container. But it has been in there for 3 years (this year being the third). It seems to hold misture, but the soil temps might be impeding the water intake. Some of the fruits drop at night though, and not during the heat of the day. I think the rootbound idea is a fair one. I guess I'll have to root prune it this winter. If it's not rootbound when I do that then I'll just give it to someone to put in the ground (I have no ground!)

I read an article in organic gardening years ago about monks beating the evil sprits out of orchard trees , they start older trees to begin to produce fruit again. I have seen more than one perfectly healthy persimmon tree drop its fruit, I had one that did this every year one year it had only two left on the tree and my wife decided to weed wack around the tree when she pulled the trigger the end of the machine came up and damaged the trunk of the tree i got to eat the last two persimmons. I think the trees will drop fruit in favor of growth ,when life is threadened it will hold them, after that i would wack the base of the tree of the with a pvc pipe only once or twice , you can easily over do it, it will bruse the cambibum layer cutting back and threating the life. most greatest need is to reproduce. af after that when i saw them start to drop i would wack the tree and it would hold the fruit

Most people garden in part to relax, though "Frenetic Gardening" would be a good book title. How will the tree cost you, as you have already planted it? You won't get fruit this fall (lasts until ~21st December) but with a starting plant that large you easily could get a few fruit next fall, one year after planting.

The trunk isn't black...it's just cuz I took the picture after I watered.

So the persimmon won't grow fruit if it remains in the pot? It's going to be several months before I can plant it, maybe I shouldn't have bought it so soon :( I bought it because it had so many buds and i thought each of them would turn to a fruit, instead they're all falling off...

You can replant it in a bigger pot to wait several months until it can get into ground.

Well, no, that's not true, all my trees are in pots including the persimmons, and 2 of my 3 persimmons fruited the first year after I planted them.

Since you only took a picture of the pot and not the branches, it's hard to say, but the tree is probably too small to carry 30 fruit. And the pot in the photo is very small, my trees are in 1/2 wine barrels.

So it could be dropping fruit because it is stressed from heat or cold or small pot size, or because it is trying to keep the right amount of fruit for its size, or because you are overwatering it.

But don't be too unhappy, your tree is better off because persimmons will over-set fruit. Mine did and it snapped at the base because I hadn't thinned and left too many fruit on it, it got too heavy, and instead of dropping fruit, the tree trunk just split.

persimmons are persnicky. once i got a couple on the second leaf, but 4 years seems to be what they like before producing. & they're famous for dropping fruit until they're older.

my persimmon tree had two buds last year and they both dropped. I was told by my nursery that the tree was testing to see if it was mature enough to fruit and would likely be ready this year. So far so good this year, as I have over 100 buds that are flowering and starting to develop fruit. Hopefully that stays the case through October. My tree is 7 ft
