4 yr old persimmon dropped nearly all fruit

I still have yet to get any fruit from my 4 year old Hira Taneashi persimmon. This year it finally set fruit but then dropped it all. I have two measly fruit left tat have not grown in weeks. I can only assume that they too will drop. The tree gets about 8 hours of sun and is in a container.

Could it be the soil temperature fluctuations associated with a container? There has been lots of rain and cool weather lately, and when my yard does heat up it gets really hot.

Hira Tanensahi is parthenocarpic, so I know that they are prone to drop, but my mother has the exact same tree and it was 2 feet tall and loaded last year. What is up with mine?

I have not been fertilizing it at all because last year each branch grew about a foot and a half. Could there be residual nutrients making it go wild?

How big is the pot? After 4 years, it seems likely it's rootbound.

I think the roots getting too hot is a concern. I've read that persimmons drop fruit in response to water stress, and in a pot, that's hard to avoid, especially when they get hot.

Alex is correct, if the roots are crowded in that pot, it's definitely in stress and it will drop fruit.
I have a large hana fuyu tree in the ground for 4 years, the past two years it dropped the fruit. This year it's loaded, and i'm hoping they'll stay.

chrisms, There does come a time when cutting losses makes the most sense, but with ten years invested in your tree you might first consider a few options to make your tree more productive. Adding a tree with male flowers, such as Hokkaido or Maru or a number of others, often decreases fruit drop. Also make sure the tree is not getting too little or too much (especially in a poorly draining clay based soil)water. Some varieties are more prone to fruit drop than others, and by grafting a different variety to your tree you may take advantage of the significant root mass of your ten year old tree and end up with better results. As an example, I have a ten year old Hachiya that continues to drop most of its crop, while none of my other trees of that age do.

My last planting of Fuji grew about 4 ft the first year. I had an ave of 20 apples per tree the second leaf and an increasing crop each year after. The trees topped out at 8-9 ft about the 4th leaf. There were 5 trees each on M26 and Geneva 16. The trees were nearly the same size. So if a planting is growing well enough it is possible to have an early crop and rapid canopy development at the same time. Given that I did the same thing in CA with Pink Lady, I think a long growing season is helpful for early cropping. The first Pink Lady crop on 2nd leaf trees was poor quality do to excess nitrogen. Third leaf crop was good.

Hi Tony, Beautiful pics. I see your photo of Snowqueen nectarine. Can I safely assume you grew that fruit & did not buy it at the grocery? Seems like a silly question, but... most reports I've seen say that Snowqueen is one the most highly-rated nects for flavor, but is NOT cold hardy beyond Zone-7, which is why I have not attempted growing it on my vacation property in Zone-6b. Are you growing Snowqueen in the ground in Zone-5A Nebraska? Did it survive this past winter? If you are successfully fruiting Snowqueen in Zone-5A, then all bets are off! How old is the tree? I have had fruit from 4/11 of my avocado varieties. They will all flower in the season as mine are grafted. Not all hold fruit if they are to young and drop them. But that is not true for everyone. There are many factors that play into a tree holding fruit set including weather, temperature, pollination etc....... I've known people who have had 2-3 year old trees that were grafted produce fruit and hold on the tree. I'm one of them who did so in containers with a Mexicola and Wurtz. You can see them in the Avocado forum under container trees. My Wurtz ( Little Cado ) has 30 plus fruit on it this year and is in a 24inch box and my Mexicola is in a raised bed now and I'm expecting it to fruit this year and several other trees that are now in the ground. I will update the group this summer. I'm expecting fruit from my Fuerte, Pinkerton, Stewart, Bacon, Mexicola and Wurtz. My other trees are still to young.

The pot is 25 gallon container. But it has been in there for 3 years (this year being the third). It seems to hold misture, but the soil temps might be impeding the water intake. Some of the fruits drop at night though, and not during the heat of the day. I think the rootbound idea is a fair one. I guess I'll have to root prune it this winter. If it's not rootbound when I do that then I'll just give it to someone to put in the ground (I have no ground!)
